Donors bridge funding gap for plaza

The river critters are on order and plans are in place for the water spouts as fundraising nears completion for the $2 million plaza at the base of the new Missouri River pedestrian bridge

Quote:
On Tuesday, the City Council is expected to approve a contract for $187,000 that would go toward buying playground equipment that resembles river critters. The specially designed swings and rides will look like fish, birds and other wildlife common in the Missouri River valley.

Another important feature will be the 26 water jets that can be pranced through by children during the day and lit in bright colors at night.

Also included in the $2 million for the plaza is a "fiber wave" sculpture created by Japanese artist and architect Makoto Sei. The 150 carbon fiber shafts in the sculpture will be nearly 16˝ feet tall.

Larry Foster, city Parks Department administrator, said the bridge and the plaza are on schedule to open Nov. 30.

November 30th my |expletive|!  I mean, i'm not a construction manager or anything but what the heck would take them 10 months to do!?  I'm sayin they'll be done by aug/sept.  I could be wrong, but |expletive|-a man, let's get this show on the road!  I can hear them working on it from where i live...at least, i think i can anyway.  Sounds like a ram or some kind of large jack-hammer over there.  Or it could have been that beer i drank the night before Wink

Well, considering they've got 85% of the suspension spans to put in place, that might take more than a few months, newguy.  I'd guess their schedule includes contingincies for various slips to the schedule and so far they're meeting the schedule with slip, so if things go well, they could wrap up a little early.

Yeah, i suppose so... it's like this, to quote MTO--'agonizingly slow' Smile  Even though it is moving along at the speed they want, and we can see visual progress...and it hasn't really been that long... but still!

Family Park Planned At Foot Of Pedestrian Bridge

KETV wrote:
The Omaha Landing Plaza plans originally called for a park with trees and a flagpole. After more discussion, the city and its partners felt something was missing. "Everybody said this needs to be a destination space, " said Omaha Parks and Recreation Department manager Larry Foster. "This needs to be a special plaza or park that will attract people from all over the city to come down with their kids."

The new design brings art and fun for the family. There will be animal sculptures made of granite for children to play on. They'll be in the shapes of endangered species, Foster said, such as the pallid sturgeon and least tern. There will also be fountains dancing all around the plaza.

Eomaha's Urban discussion group
"Official: Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge"
http://eomahaforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1163
==============================================================

Here are three Illustrations of the Pedestrian Bridge plaza from Online slide show with the July 26th, 2007 Omaha World-Herald article Omaha council approves sculpture for pedestrian bridge.

The Pedestrian Bridge plaza was originally discussed earlier in this thread at:

http://eomahaforums.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=86194&highlight=sculpture+pedestrian+bridge#86194

I can't wait to see the finished Plaza. Now take a progress photo report on the bridge itself.
--------------------------

Late yesterday morning I took photos of the Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge from various locations on the Nebraska side:

... From the east of Webster Street between Qwest Center Omaha and Parking lot D.

The Iowa Pier is on the left & Nebraska is on the right. This view shows each Pier appearing asymmetrical with cable on one side, and yet the bridge is symmetrical. Why! The bridge deck is on the left side of Iowa Pier and the right side of Nebraska pier. (that is right!)

... From the Riverfront Place Riverview parking.

The Pier and approach on the Iowa side, the gap is closing.

The Iowa & Nebraska Pier viewed from the North.

National Park Service Building is behind & right of the Nebraska Pier.
Here the cable hangs symmetrical from the Pier.

Just South of the Riverfront place Town homes, a row of spools of cable for the bridge.

... North & East side of National Park Service Building.

View of Iowa Pier from parking of the Park Service Building.

View of Nebraska Pier from the Riverfront Trail.
Gallup Headquarter can be seen below the bridge deck.

... North side of the National Park Service Building.
This next photo series views the bridge from Left to Right.

The Omaha Landing with the Riverfront place tower at Right.

Do you remember this picture I took back in June 07, showing the exposed bolts on the Nebraska spine?
We have come a long way, but not yet done!

Just take a few steps west, and look back and see the sweeping "S" bridge path beginning to form
between Omaha and Council Bluffs.

By November the above view should be similar to this.

nice shots.

After reading your captions I have a question, are you cutting and pasting these from some where else, or are not seeing the other 8,000 pictures posted since your last visit.

Brad,  all the captions on my pictures, posted Yesterday, are new except for one on “exposed bolts”.  That one was copied with slight modification from above the same picture on my October 28,2007 Post:

http://eomahaforums.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=88975&#88975

I forgot to change “spine” to Pier, which is the correct term for the bridge tower. Also I copyed landmarks names (Riverfront Place, Park Service Building) from my October post for proper spelling.

How do you take pictures within the construction site? I always take my pictures from the other side of the construction fence. I walked the construction road next to bridge on Iowa side once. That was on Saturday for my October photo post. Normally I don’t go inside Construction sites.

I was looking at other bridge projects on the internet, and found one being done in NYC that was pretty interesting.  It's all part of 5 structures, city wide, as one big art project.  Something like this (on the Iowa side) would be a nice compliment to the fountain on the Omaha side (though, not necessarily under the bridge as pictured).  A small set of man-made rapids might work well, with the nature trails and parks, etc, topped off with a small artistic waterfall.

Besides that, the one under the brooklyn bridge looks cool Wink

The Architect of the Bridge hired me to go in there once a week and take photos for them.

Good ol' Iowa West.  See, the bridge is spurring development...helping to prove that it isn't just for looks.  Is it the scale of development that some think is necessary to justify it 100%?  No, but anything is more than nothing, and it will make this area easily recognizable in the years to come.  For us Council Bluffs folks, it is turning into quite a landmark as well.  It will be an impressive site to see when coming to and from Omaha, and helps anchor such a beautiful and inspiring piece of architecture.  It's making its transition from just one city's bridge to "our bridge," connecting these 2 great cities.  And that's exactly what it was designed to do.  I hope they get done early enough for it to be warm out, i can't wait to bike across that thing!

I am not sure about that.  You should see the size of the turds on the trail over by Gallup...
