From omaha.com:

"he best source for news and information in Omaha and across the region is about to get better!

Over the next few months, we're rolling out new features and sections that will make getting what you want online even easier:

  • Brand new classified sections for homes, jobs and stuff - you'll search, buy and sell faster.

  • Streamlined Online Edition - you'll make fewer stops to get the lowdown.

  • Fun and useful features - share your photos, submit calendar items, get breaking news alerts, and more.

We'll keep you posted on each exciting change. Just check here to find out what's new online - Right Here, Right Now!"

I wonder if some better screening of advertisers is in order. A co-worker got 2 virus warnings Sunday morning while browsing their website.

I'll be curious to see what the "share your photos" thing is.

That would make their day! It will be nice to have a change over there though. I’m sure they will be checking this to see what we are saying.

It could be worse; they could go hire all the 17 year olds from the Lincoln paper.

If I share photos on their site, I will put my name on them like Josh does!

It will probably be something where you give up the rights of the photo to the OWH. Do you really want your best pics to become property of the paper?

Hopefully they'll fix their buggy registration system.

If you water mark the photo there is not much they can do about that but I can just see the paper doing exactly what d’shawn said. And then them turning around and saying to us that we can’t post them on the forum.

I'm not sure if the OWH still has a yearly amatuer photography contest, but IIRC the submissions rules made you give up a lot of copyright permission to them. While you still had ownership of the image you gave them every right to distribute/copy/sell/profit from your picture any way they saw fit. Legally this is to cover their butts and if you don't like it, don't submit a picture.

I doubt they would require you to relinquish full ownership of the image to the point that the orginal artist couldn't display it themselves. That is pretty unneccessary.

Yeah, the article on their web site that says "in just a few days..." has been pissing me off, since I've been checking it daily to see if it is updated.  They should have said "in just a few weeks..."

Agreed. Talk about false advertising. It appeared as if they were going to make the switch last Sunday.

I wonder if the changes will include no longer having pop up ads with spyware.  I haven't personally had this happen but a co-worker had their pop ups trigger 2 spyware alerts.

Looks nice, but they still need to do away with their pop up adds!

The World-Herald actually refers to them as "pop under" ads, because when you close a browser window, they're there. They say they limit them to two per browser session.

The following is a list of what is not on Omaha.com that is in the newspaper:

Axle Gulench and the Gate of No Return
Baby Page
Personal Ads
Hints From Heloise
Sunday's Real Estate stories
Food Express
National Editorial Cartoons
Comics
Business section- Sioux Falls Livestock, Nonferrous Metal Prices, Federal Debt Totals, World Gold Bullion, Stock Price Listings, Commodities
(There are several editorial columnists Omaha.com does not have online rights to publish.)

It doesn't seem like much of an improvement, functionally or aesthetically.

But I'm sure they will be working kinks out over the next week or so.

I went to the gadgets and games section, and there's a whole sub-section devoted exclusively to Apple.  Is it recognizing I'm using Safari, or is this available to everyone as a regular section?

Any article older than Sunday does not come up on the search option. I was looking for an article from Saturday but had no luck.

I'm peeved they moved Public Pulse to the pay-only area.  I don't really have the option to subscribe to the world herald in Chicago, it turns out.

Furthermore, the public pulse of all things SHOULD be free to read.   it's the only thing in the paper they don't write or pay for.

So far, I can't find archives (I was out of town this weekend and wanted to scan the article from the weekend).

Currently, it just times out.  It's been painfully slow all week.

The horrid registration that can't remember you (sometimes in the same session) is still there.

Way to go OWH.  Who came up with this idea/implementation?  Have they been fired yet?

The OWH pumps up this new website for weeks. It goes live and is completely worthless. The archive is a joke.  Graphically, it's outdated - looks like something from 1999.  Typical OWH...
