PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. - A historic toll bridge could last another 30 years under a $4 million renovation plan that ends talk of building two new bridges linking Nebraska and Iowa.

That should clear the way for Iowa to proceed with its plan to build a single four-lane bridge connecting U.S. Highway 34 in Glenwood to U.S. Highway 75 south of Bellevue.

Plattsmouth's bridge project's details unveiled

Quote:
The historic toll bridge at Plattsmouth is expected to be closed for much of next year during a $3.2 million renovation project that will extend the bridge's life by 10 to 20 years.

On Thursday, officials with the Nebraska Department of Roads held an information meeting in Plattsmouth to explain details of the project. . .

Weander said the toll bridge would be closed between May and October 2008.

The proposed renovations include repairing the bridge's piers, replacing deteriorated steel beams and building a new two-lane deck with new guardrail and roadway lighting. . .

Construction on the new $100 million [Highway 34] bridge linking Sarpy County and Glenwood should begin in 2011 and finish two years later, said John Selmer, a representative of the Iowa Department of Transportation.
