The Space Shuttle is Coming to Omaha!

I have been told the the Space Shuttle that landed in California last week will be stopping in Omaha at Offut AFB tomorrow  (saturday) evening between 5 and 7 for re-fueling.

If the winds stay as forcasted, I would say that a View from the Twin Creek area could be GREAT!

I will be on Base and hope to get good pictures.

Brad

I found this NASA phone number: 321-867-2525

Although it just says that the shuttle is now in the air... having took off at just before 8am (our time).  Is it really going to take 7 hours to get here? (assuming it's going to actually stop here).

It landed at Amarillo.  They said it had another refueling stop to make... would they go to Offutt from Amarillo??

It is currently scheduled to land at Offutt at 2:30.  Right now the winds are holding for the 12 approach would give the southern edges of Omaha a great view.

The shuttle weighs so much that the 747 can only take on a limited amount of fuel.  The shuttle on top also creates a significant amount of drag that limits the altitude and speeds the 747 can fly at.

I could barely see it from our store on 132nd & Maple St. But, with it being such a massive piece of machinery, I could definitely make out what it was. I was just hopping around on the local news websites, and although I can't stnad KMTV's coverage and newscast, they seemed to be the only site offering info on it, besides OWH of course. But, KMTV indicated it would be staying put here in Omaha overnight, and leaving again for Florida in the morning. So, I would imagine a gazillion peple will be trying to cruise down there to take pics - if they can. I don't really know, but can you see Offutt's runways as a civilian?

Thanks to my father-in-law... we were able to watch from on the base.  My wife took these stills... while I caught the event with our old camcorder (still processing on youtube).  Thanks Brad for bringing this to our attention!!

"Daddy! There it is!"

There was a pretty good crowd on hand... no doubt base families who got the inside scoop.

Finally coming to a rest.

"Off limits!"

For some reason I'm afraid to explore I want to say "Is that a space shuttle on your runway or are you just happy to see me?"

You are so bad! Don't you know that this is how they make 747's. Did I really say that?

funny email i got a while ago:
A mother and her son were flying on Southwest Airlines from Kansas City to Chicago . The son (who had been looking out the window)
turned to his mother and asked, "If big dogs have baby dogs and big cats have baby cats, why don't big planes have baby planes?
The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the flight attendant. So the boy asked the flight attendant, "If big
dogs have baby dogs and big cats have baby cats, why don't big planes have baby planes?" The flight attendant responded,
"Did your mother tell you to ask me that?" The little boy said, "Yes she did." "Well, then, tell your mother that there are no baby
planes because Southwest always pulls out on time. Have your mother explain that to you."

brad, any word on when the shuttle will pull out...er leave?

OK - back to the subject.

I heard on the news that it is here because of bad weather east, and that departure depends on just that - whether the weather is better.
