For history, I would add the General Dodge House in Council Bluffs.

As a fellow history geek, there are quite a few things to check out in Omaha.

The first place would be the Durham Museum, which gets a lot of great exhibits coming through as they are part of the Smithsonian circuit. http://www.durhammuseum.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The museum also runs some great bus tours that narrate things such as Omaha's mob past, etc..

If you're into aeronautical history, just southwest of the Omaha metro is the Strategic Air Command Air and Space museum, which has two hangars full of warplanes and quite a few artifacts/suits/prototype vehicles from NASA. http://www.sasmuseum.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you're into frontier history at all, there are some great state parks that run some great tours / reenactments such as Fort Atkinson State Park and the General Crook House:

I think another very underrated museum is the Union Pacific Museum, over in Council Bluffs. It's very well put together and if I remember correctly is free: http://www.uprrmuseum.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;



I agree that west Omaha is where you'll want to look for larger yards. Also the Papillion and La Vista areas. As far as job propects, I think you've got some excellent opportunities as there are multiple colleges in the area that have broadcasting/communications programs. Omaha is going to be the regional communications hub, so you'll have multiple avenues there. There are several Fortune 1000 companies here too that are always looking for PR/Corporate Communications people.

West Omaha (esp past I-680) is very suburban, so you'll most likely find bigger yards out there.

The wife and I may be transferring to Omaha from Kentucky, and boy, do I have questions.

So, we'll be looking for a house with a good-size yard (no kids, but a pair of border collies who love to run). Any recommendations as to where we might start looking?

She'll, of course, have a job, but I'll be looking for one. I've got a Master's in English, taught at the college level, working currently in public radio, won a handful of regional and national awards for my journalism/documentary work. What do the prospects look like?

What do history geeks do for fun in Omaha?
