There has not been talk about redrawing the dividing line for ESHS. The third HS will alleviate overcrowding at Elkhorn High. Yes, ESHS is currently bigger than EHS but enrollment trends/projections show EHS will be larger than South in a few years. I would guess parents south of Dodge have nothing to worry about currently. The district may allow students south of Dodge to attend either north side high school to alleviate crowding if they choose but one can only speculate about that.

Do they have land yet?
180th & Maple - - http://www.omaha.com/news/education/elk ... 696da.html

the big question is how will they redraw the lines within the district which determine which high school the students attend. lots of families south of Dodge who are hearing they may redraw lines to send them to Elkhorn High instead of Elkhorn South (which they can see from their house) and that's going to cause lots of complaints.

Hopefully they plan ahead and they don't have a beautiful new school with portables in front of it in a few years...

OPS targets spot for new northwest high school
Erin Duffy: World-Herald staff writer wrote: Land near 156th and Ida Streets could become the site of a new 1,500-student high school. The property is within OPS’s boundaries but is just south of the Bennington school district.

I have actually heard that there is a group of people backing off of the staying in Class B issue. I was told to not be surprised if Elkhorn and Elkhorn South bother get to A status before they move on another HS.

Class A schools have killed themselves in terms of extra-curriculars.  They aim so high that only the super talented have a shot, and the rest of the kids are left out.  Given the nature of college applications, everyone wants to have something on their application.  Selling popcorn at one Sunday afternoon performance of one school play doesn't get you anywhere.

There are plenty of other things to be involved with than just sports. If you want to be involved, you'll be involved whether you're at a small school or a big school. I went to Millard North and I was involved in a lot of things even though I wasn't particularly the best at any of them. And I would argue I had a lot more academic opportunities because my school was larger than the Elkhorn schools, and thus could offer classes that are only taken by a smaller portion of students.

Elkhorn North High School at 204th and Fort?

How fast is Elkhorn growing now? Seems like its where most of the development around the city is.. ?

The sewer only goes to far west, however.  That will begin to force people north and south (south already filling in).
They can't go west.  That's the DC west school district.

Basically nearly double in size in 15 years.  Anyone know roughly their territory?

Looks like a lot of their growth will shift from the south to the north.

Not sure what difference building a new school would make as it would be open to all students in OPS. Also taxpayers would be screaming as there is no need for a new high school based on school populations.

The moving part is interesting as I know families who still live in OPS boundaries but there kids are going to Millard schools.

by Guest » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:21 pm

We pulled our kids out for the same reason.  We moved them to Concordia Academy and then Concordia Jr./Sr.  It was easier than moving.

Multi-Cultural Flight from NW Omaha

by guesty » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:14 pm

I just sold my house in North West Omaha and closed on a new house in Elkhorn to avoid having to send my kids to Northwest High School.  I know of at least 4 more families who have moved out of OPS to Elkhorn, or Millard schools for the same reason.  Two of the families where White, one was Black and one was Asian, all of them said their number one reason for moving was they didn't want their kids going to Northwest High School.

OPS should build a new High School out in this area rather than trying send these kids down to their failing schools, to balance out the test scores of all of the poor kids that OPS is failing to provide a decent education to.

Hmm I suppose the facts I found were a bit out of date.  I should of asked my mom I suppose, she works there too.

by Uffda » Tue Jan 04, 2011 5:04 pm

I asked a friend today that works at Buffett , she told me they have only slots for 25 magnet students per grade level. She said there use to be more but with Buffett's neighborhood population growing they had to cut back the number they could accept.

by iamjacobm » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:11 am

I was wrong about being the most they are basically equal to each other magnet, but it is more than you think 50 students of each grade are bussed from outside the schools territory.  So if there is about 300 in a grade(guessing I couldn't find exact numbers) that would mean 16 almost 17 percent are bussed in.  I guess it is in the eye of the beholder, but I find that to be a pretty considerable number.

by Uffda » Thu Dec 30, 2010 7:10 am

go on the ops website and look at a map for the buffett territory you will see why there are lots of busses. There is only so much room for Magnet students ie. children outside the buffett attendance area and it is a small percentage of the whole - the rest are 'neighborhood' students.

by iamjacobm » Thu Dec 30, 2010 12:51 am

Uffda wrote:oh i didnt say there wasn't bussed in students. I said the major part of the student body belongs in buffett's attendance area. They get bussed becomes they live outside area deemed to be walkable by OPS. There is a small percentage that choose to come in as magnet students.
Ehh they turn kids away every year a lot choose to go there.

by iamjacobm » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:37 pm

I wouldn't say it is small there is a fairly large number of bussed students for it location.  I would venture to say it is one of the most bussed middle schools in OPS.

by Uffda » Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:14 pm

How are these parents uber involved?  Couldn't they become just as involved in a high school like NW where their child could go?

Don't forget that many of Buffet's students themselves are bussed to this top 16 school.
Most of the students who attend Buffett live within the Buffett school boundaries. There are students that opt to come to Buffett but their number is small given the total population of around 1400 students.
