homeless people can afford blow as their drug of choice?
A bottle of Thunderbird or enhaling some pipe cleaner I could believe, but how many times have you ever heard about a homeless person snorting cocaine (which keep in mind is much different than crack cocaine).

That panoramic skyline photo really reinforces what Omaha has gone through over the past few years. Look at what's new in that photo, Qwest Center, Gallop, First National, UPC. Can you even imagine this vantage point from the Omaha of say 1997? My how far you have come O-town. Been a while since I'v...

I'm with you guys. There needs to be a more appropriate design for this location. What is with that concrete looking stuff on the corners? And how about something along the roofline to add detail and interest? This looks like a prefab concrete building. Will the brick even be real, or will it be a v...

Salt Lake City and Buffalo are two cities that aren't all that much bigger than Omaha and that have light rail. We need more than just light rail... streetcars, BRT lines, commuter rail, a more effective bus system. Basically, less of a dependance on the automobile is what I am talking about. Housto...

This is a question for icejammer, there has been talk of rebuilding I-80 in Council Bluffs. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, but was there any allocation for this project in this transportation bill? This bill will be for the next 5 years, and if nothing was allocated to the I-80 reconstruction, ...

That's a fun street to hang out on, and those bars usually get a more eclectic crowd than what you would find at a West Des Moines nightclub. At the Royal Mile, it's pretty common to have a techno or indie rock concert at the bar next door, while getting hit up by some panhandlers that hang out in t...

The Royal Mile is an awesome bar, and one of my favorites in downtown! Did you make it to the upstairs bar called the Red Monk? They've got a type of beer that's brewed by a Tapestry of Monks, and is imported from Holland. Apparently it's only available in two place in Iowa, but it costs $14 for a v...

If the current growth trends continue, Omaha will continue to steadily widen it's population size difference over DSM..The metro population difference is widening not closing.. Count me in the category of someone who doesn't foresee DSM's metro population ever passing Omahas. However, it's simple m...

Nice shots. Yeah, it sucks taking pictures during the day this time of year with all the haze. I don't have any pictures of the skyline from the 1st base line, but I know there are several sites out there that feature photos of minor league ballparks, and this angle is shown. Your first photo is the...

I agree with CountMC, and have seen first hand (especially over the past few years) a lot of articles in the Register noting the good things that have been going on in Omaha. If a city does something good, it's going to get press in the region, and Omaha has done a lot of good recently. I don't know...

Also, I think a lot of Des Moines to Omaha comparisons IS due to the fact that with geographic location and somewhat comparitive economies (both white collar cities) pit our cities as automatic rivals. This is what I've been saying for years now. I've since learned that Omaha offers a lot of advanta...

Maybe I'm reading into things differently than other people, but when I hear the word influence, I think of the sphere of influence that larger cities have over a region of smaller cities. Shopping, sports, culture, weekend trips, business, media, etc. I hate to deflate the Omaha sails, but Omaha do...

Something else for Des Moines and Omaha to compete over
Des Moines zoo officials, and ex-Iowa governor, and Asian Alliance of Iowa have begun the attempt to "lease" pandas from China as well. HD Zoo is further along in the process, is obviously a much better zoo, and probably has a better facility to house pandas, so this may be a long shot for...

We've been discussing the negative press about the Iowa Events Center on the Des Moines site recentely. The DSM Register went out of their way to conjure up negative images of apathy for the new arena, to interviewing people who think it'll fail and become a boondoggle. Sound familiar Omaha? I recal...

I thought one of the coolest features of the Triton homes was the 10-12 vaulted ceilings on the top level. Look at the way the roof is pitched, that equals a lot ceiling space for the upstairs bedrooms. I can testify that these homes aren't built the best and they may not be perfect from the outside...
