Re: What does Omaha need?

I don't know if Omaha really needs anything, but to just be itself and continue to naturally evolve w/ time as the years unfold -- as it has from the start. To sit around and wish it were 100% a "Kansas City" or 100% a "Minneapolis" is just a waste of time, imo. My focus is not r...

Re: Crossroads - Redevelopment Plan

I'm down in Kansas City and I drove by the beautiful and warm & cozy Briarcliff development north of Downtown Kansas City. Are we sure the development shouldn't have European style & flair like that (terra cotta roofs, black iron, stucco)? I realize Kansas City pulls that off better than Om...

I'm chuckling about the name "Antler View." Gee...what inspired that? Could it be the nearby town w/ a bulbous water tower on the near horizon, one named "Elkhorn?"

Lol...you make me laugh....the way you say things... 1) Yes, St. Louis has a lot going for it -- that I appreciate more now at my age, then when my family lived there in the 90's and early 2000's. Back then, I was so focused on L.A. w/ palm trees practically reflected in my shades. Now, over L.A., I...

Interesting. I like that. That's what I personally like hearing: Detailed thoughts, detailed thinking. This thread is getting good... (The Lakewood Commons area I mentioned is built on a grid, too. I was just thinking that today, while looking at Lakewood Commons, that they should really think about...

Re: If The North Freeway Was Extended to I-680...

I think many people don't go for the "New Urbanism" developments because everybody's aware it is against the norm, they know the development is set apart as unique & different (If they buy/build there, does that make them unique & different people, too? Will their friends laugh?), ...

One thing I will miss about Crossroads when it is bulldozed is that tall arch of smokey/bronze glass on the old Dillards store. I love seeing that from 90th & Dodge. I wish they would take those panes, and put them on Oak View's Dillard store (Which to this day, still confuses me, why there are...

Re: If The North Freeway Was Extended to I-680...

Then every city looks clunky then -- including Chicago. Regardless of your nice ideals, freeways are always going to be needed. It's kinda like how an "urban idealist" hates cul-de-sacs & houses w/ garages in the front, but those mostly continue to be built while the "New Urbanism...

Re: The Bridges of Madison County

The purpose of the covered bridge is to protect the wooden membrane structure from the weather. Most of these were in remote areas and were built "covered" so they didn't need much maintenance. Makes perfect sense. Loved those covered bridges. I stopped by one in Indiana about 3-4 years a...

Oh for |expletive|'s sake!!! Are you seriously measuring Omaha's worth as a city by its freeway system? Do you realize that these uncompleted freeway nubs exist in every |expletive| city? There's one on Lake Shore Drive here in Chicago RIGHT by Navy Pier. Completing the north freeway would serve ab...

Re: Crossroads - Redevelopment Plan

What a cluttered plan, just really bad design. Omaha needs quality urban design with a sense of place, not this scrambled mess. Couldn't agree with this more. Can you both expand? What would you do differently? Are you both designers? I just feel ANY plan could be submitted, and in general, somebod...

Re: If The North Freeway Was Extended to I-680...

That is good advice. Thanks. If Dodge was a full uninterrupted freeway from West Omaha to Downtown, then some certain buildings and landmarks would have to be demolished such as Memorial Park, Lewis and Clark Middle School and the Community Playhouse. And I don't think a lot of people would be too ...

I was looking at Oak View today and thinking about the impact all this will have on a slightly struggling mall. Then, it hit me: Maybe it will help Oak View overall. For example, if people are at West Farm shopping, and a family member all of a sudden says she needs to go to Bath & Body Works at...

Wow, that Crossroads slide show (on this latest article) is something to see. I've seen that 1955 bowling alley picture before, and it just looks like Omaha is in the dust bowl. I don't get why it looks so barren, like just open & grassy prairie seen in 1800's shots. Where's the farms & crop...

Re: If The North Freeway Was Extended to I-680...

I just needed to get it out of my system. I'd been feeling this way about Omaha's freeways for years. As far back as 2007. 10 years. I've done all right for myself. Yeah, okay, I guess I am little obsessed with roads. I tend to get carried away from time to time. But there's nothing to be concerned...

The Bridges of Madison County

Yesterday, I decided to go on a little day trip from Omaha and I saw the Bridges of Madison County -- FINALLY. (I first saw that movie down in South Florida in 2003, and it made me long for the sights & sounds of the Midwest, where I grew up. Plus, I always wanted to go see those bridges. To thi...

I am so happy for the town. I love Blair. I went to school in FC, and I occassionally got up to Blair, but never thought much about it. Then, about a few years ago, I went up there, and I thought: "When did this town get so cute?" That business district is pleasant.
