Re: Historic Street Names

Thanks for the information! I knew I'd left some of them out.

Re: Historic Street Names

In the original core of downtown, the street names are also alphabetical north to south: Burt, Cuming, Davenport, Dodge, Douglas, Farnam, Harney, Jackson...I think they're all names of American generals, maybe someone can confirm that (or not)?

Re: Family Fare - No Frills - Bag N Save

The Saddle Creek store is the one I shop at most, being fairly close to me. I'm disgusted with the snotty comments on here. That particular store serves a very under-served lower-income neighborhood. Many people don't have cars and they can take the bus or walk there. It's always busy whenever I go ...

I'm sorry, I'm not in the In Crowd; what are the Clink and the Bob?

Re: Benson

I followed that link but their font color is so light, and so small, I couldn't read it. I could embiggen it but the light gray color is not only unreadable, it's offensive. So many web sites are using that now that I have to believe they are deliberately disinviting certain readers. Like me.

 Well, I was wrong, wasn't I - but at least I triggered a small outburst of info-sharing. Thanks, guys! Looks like *my* history-reading needs a growth spurt.

Ah - good to know. Was that who the Dodge House is named after, too?

Re: Omaha's "String of Pearls"

I'm arriving late to this discussion, but one thing struck me: Why don't they *already* have "hats" over the top - hasn't anyone in this city ever heard of light pollution? Cities all over the globe are capping their street lights to curb light pollution. Seems to me caps would solve two p...

Re: Historic Street Names

This is fascinating! I do know that a lot of the older streets, such as Cuming, Burt, Dodge, and others, are named after military generals - many from the Civil War, some (probably) from the so-called "Indian wars." I agree, one person who can't be bothered to educate themselves shouldn't ...

Re: Benson

The parking along NW Radial is dangerous, but I did see a parking pad in the rear. Yes, there's parking off 48th Street, around back. I'm hoping they will maintain it diligently during the winter months. Nice place and the one guy I met is friendly and helpful. I've tried their dairy and eggs so fa...

Re: Bag N Save

The neighborhood fought but lost. Check out the Benson forum, it's a Bucky's.
That's what I was afraid of. Dang it.

Re: Bag N Save

I hope this isn't too off-topic, but has anyone heard anything solid about what's moving in where Louis' Market used to be in Benson? Last I heard it was another Bucky's, which we don't need. What we need is a grocery store! :?

Dick Cosaert, president of Cubby's Inc., owns the grocery store and leases the space at 5718 Northwest Radial, where the store has been in business since 1957. I question that date. My grandparents immigrated from Europe to Omaha in about the 1910s, and I know from family stories that "old man...

There goes my last reason to shop at either of those stores.  If the prices aren't competitive, I'll start shopping at Hy Vee and/or Baker's. They're closer to me, anyway. Buh-bye, Bag'N'Save!
