Re: Holland's Greenspace

What the Holland didn't spur, what the mall didn't spur, what could have made the mall area special and really could have made downtown explode....was anything other than office and parking space. No retail, no restaurants, no housing, etc. Nothing to make the area surrounding the mall 24 hour or e...

Would be very nice to get that building activated again, especially now that there's probably no hope of the Diner lot being developed anytime soon.

Re: Exchange Building--1905 Harney

Well since the cornice and base were already destroyed, I like the look of the building now a lot more than that picture from the early 80's.

I never even knew that was an old building, I just always assumed it was something from the 60's or 70's.

The GLM destroyed so much already, it would be a shame to lose almost every historic building north of Farnam from 10th-14th.

Omaha Buildings Hiding Under Cladding or Paint

Seeing as this topic has come up in a few recent posts, I'm wondering if anyone knows all of the historic buildings in Omaha that are hiding underneath cladding or paint? The ones I know of: - Central Park Towers (1511 Farnam) - Grain Exchange Building/AIM Building (1905 Harney) - Building on SW Cor...

Oh wow, I had no idea this building was that old either. Wonder what it looks like underneath.

I've gotta say though, this is one of the very few times where I think the new "modern" facade actually looks pretty good.

I wish there was some brick incorporated into more than just the corner section, but I like the design compared to that same plain mixed-material modern design that we see over and over and over again across the country. This would be a very nice addition to a great street. Farnam has really taken o...

I'm more optimistic....I think we'll see them add the word "Former" to "World Headquarters" on their sign in 2016. But seriously, it would make sense to lose the flags as soon as the HQ is gone. I can't imagine any new tenants/corporations that may occupy the former HQ building ...

The number should be getting a lot closer to 7,000 residents though from the 2010 census figure. Barf. That rendering. Some people seem to get so annoyed with how preservationists get upset about every last old building/house being demolished. But maybe, just maybe if it didn't seem like 95% of new constructions had more to do with "how do we get this up as cheaply as possible" than ...

Wait, why would people who supported Jobbers Canyon be mad that they are moving into similar digs elsewhere? Out of all the possibilities, I'm happy to hear they are moving into a downtown core. I understand the concept of letting private owners do whatever they want with their own land, but when it's land within your downtown core, there's gotta be a way to make it not so profitable to let an owner sit on a surface lot for decades. In a country where eminent domain is used, I find it hard ...

The best thing Stothert could do to save face (even though, it's really not her fault whatsoever -- but politicians get blamed for a lot of things...) would be to publicly help guide the transition of ConAgra's campus to a more dense/appropriate setting. I agree with bigredmed's comment from the other thread that it would be a good idea to expand the park. Yeah, in my opinion the only good thing to come out of the whole Jobbers Canyon debacle is the wonderful HOA Park, so it would make no sense to mess with the lagoon. There's no way both 9th AND 8th street would be brought back to life right away... you can easily keep all five ConAgra buildings (for now) as well as the entire lagoon, and then add some infill. Also, there's no reason to ever adjust the lagoon anyway, even if 8th street is brought back. That would...

Yes, it's going to take a while for it to be transformed back into an urban setting, but there are several things that can be done almost immediately that will help the process along for a low amount of money.
