Re: Omaha transportation's $7.4B future
We talk about a $1 billion rail system, and people grab there pitchforks and torches. What a $1 billion (and a couple more) are for roads, its crickets, except in this forum. So frustrating. Trying to argue about it is pointless. There were people moaning when ORBT went from 28 to 35 million. These...

Re: Omaha transportation's $7.4B future
 $7.4 billion to save people maybe 5 minutes. There’s your property tax relief, Ricketts. NDOT has it. Right?? So many people complain about a $100 million streetcar but here the state wants to spend BILLIONS on ridiculously wide freeways, so we become even more dependent on the automobile. I...

Re: Omaha transportation's $7.4B future
I'm bummed that they're going to get rid of the 24th Street interchange. I really think that exit connected South Omaha and Vinton street to the rest of the city. I'm less sad about seeing the F street exit go, but that means that the only way to get to South Omaha from West Omaha or midtown is to g...

Re: The Omaha World Herald
IMO there is an opportunity for a local news source that is 100% online. There's no printing or distribution costs (or large office space to rent), and if you have a reasonable monthly subscription on Patreon, then it seems to me that it could be very popular. I think the trick would be to keep cert...

They both would require annual subsidies but without data to back it up it seems to me the cost per person/mile traviled will be MUCH less on the highway. Almost certainly. One think I can thing of is that the government doesn't have to pay for the cars, their maintence or fuel, whereas they do so ...

Omaha to Lincoln railway works as non-stop if the Lincoln end is within walking distance of downtown/Memorial Stadium/Haymarket, and the Omaha side is either in the Old Market area or near AkSarBen. It's not all about Husker Gameday, but I would definitely bet there are lots of people who would rid...

Re: Is the Omaha metro population growing faster than the US Census estimates?
The trend toward depopulation of the Great Plains and Midwest (excepting the larger cities) continues. It is a trend that is about 90 years ongoing. I doubt it will change anytime soon. Even the larger cities in the Great Lakes section are struggling. Out of them, only Indianapolis is growing at a ...

There's been a lot of talk in this forum and in the city about designs of new buildings aligning with the character of the surrounding neighborhood. The neighborhood south of railroad tracks near 13th and 10th streets is primarily light industrial with a smattering of townhomes. In my opinion, the r...

Has anyone actually been to that address? On the east side property line is a 8? story condo building. Another building east of there on Dewey. This project does not replace an august home but a rather modest non descript one. There are a number of projects tragically demolishing meaningful old bui...

Is it just the perspective of the photo or are those huge windows? They are huge windows, meant to look like a warehouse. Valid criticisms of the building notwithstanding, that's a wonderful thing. One could argue that the neighbor's aesthetic objections to the design are really just a cover for their objection to the higher density development pushing its way further into their neighborhood. One could also argue that Architecture should reflect the technology available at the time it is buil...

Part of the appeal of the Blackstone neighborhood is the character and I agree with the neighbors that the building is a completely different design style than the older buildings in th...

I don't know the answer to your question but I've always thought that this entire area is primed for high density development. I'd love to see a 4-10 storey mid-rise apartment or condo building constructed here or nearby.nativeomahan wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2019 10:36 pm Is there something up with that strip mall? There will always be devastating floods, especially during years of unpredictable weather patters such as those which occur after a large volcanic eruption. Floods like 1993, 2011, and 2019 however, are different because they're occurring with more regularity due to climate change. I got an idea. I...

I was catching up on the old controversy about the three old buildings that were part of the original HDR plan. With that, OPAS was building concert space immediately east of current building. I just drove through this area this morning. It’s looking really bland with all the empty lots . The old Page and Clarinda location now resembles a Wiffle ball field. Really unfortunate. I agree the old parking structure needs to be replaced and the apparently unused building make that block look dumpy. I'd love to know who owns that stretch of land.
