OH WOW!! I love the one with the old U.P. building with the WOW building behind it. I looked up this stretch of road on Google maps and found 2 interesting things: 1. 15th street doesn't go all the through anymore due to the FNBO park and 2. 15th street still curves to the west where the railroad us...

I'm glad Omaha has waited. All the older ideas were just going to be stupid novelties for people who visited downtown on occasion. With the new route up Farnam, this will actually connect communities. Happy for the wait and eager for the arrival. Exactly. How often would the people who live in Omah...

I'm assuming that there's something under there that's important structurally that would preclude hollowing out a part of the the hotel. I think it'd be too messy and expensive in the end and if they really wanted to reconnect 16th they should just demo the place when it outlives its usefulness. Ma...

The system only cost $100 million to build? With 20% of that covered by a federal grant? That should be very doable for Omaha. Isn't that exactly how much the elevated expressway cost? I like their idea of paying for part of it by having an area sales tax within the areas where the streetcar runs. ...

I see no evidence that metro Omaha is growing much more than 1.0% per year. How that represents an "explosion" is beyond my comprehension. Why is that word even used in the title of this thread? According to the US Census the Omaha metro increased in population by 12.8%. http://www.census...

If streetcar lines raise property values then you don't want to run them to the poorest parts of town. Those people will get priced out of their homes and apartments and end up moving away from the streetcar line built to serve them, replaced with more affluent people. Text book gentrification. The...

Re: Omaha Population Explosion
I think it's possible for Omaha proper to be larger than KCMO proper (and I sincerely hope someday this comes to pass), however I see two things impeding this possibility: 1. KCMO has reversed the trend of suburban flight. Their population increased 4.1% to 459K people between 2000 & 2010. This ...

I agree with the walkway part, but I don't think what they are saying is necessarily false. A pickup/dropoff area does nothing if it's an elderly couple going - one of the two would have to walk a distance that may be a challenge as one of them has to park the car. Just speaking from personal exper...

In an article published by the OWH when this fiasco first started, a spokesperson for the Holland said they have many elderly patrons who find the current walk very difficult, but I don't think it's anything a valet service can't fix. Maybe have a smaller parking facility on the green space, then a...

Fascinating idea. This is like the Tesla battery except on a larger scale. Do you buy a large flat Tesla battery that is charged by Solar City solar panels. The idea is that the battery charges during the day then the battery discharges during the night.

I think it was said earlier that the parking garage to the north is used by UP or someone else during the day, but that doesn't mean that Holland can't have it during the nights and weekends when they have shows. Now they've added HDR's self-imposed urgency to the mix as a threat. This is the same tactic used to dispose of Jobbers Canyon, in many ways. They have a lease that's expiring. There are possible solutions that keep the historic buildings, let Holland have a parking garage, and let HDR build on the 11th-12th-Dodge-Capitol site. Light rail is the wrong term though. Its either streetcar or urban circulator. In addition, it will bring employees and residents who may not even own or...
