Omaha World Herald wrote:Michaela Romano never considered living anywhere else. The culinary arts program at Metropolitan Community College drew her to the school, but the on-campus housing was an added perk. Metro first offered on-campus housing last March and now has 34 students living in three buildings at the Fort Omaha campus, 30th and Fort Streets. Originally, officials hoped to house as many as 120 students, said Terry Murrell, vice president of campuses and student affairs. But demand hasn't been as high as expected, so officials plan to cap residency at 48 students.

Ft. Omaha Campus
New Metro dorms home to 34 and a little mischief
Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms

This is wonderful news for MCC and North Omaha. Metro is really becoming a big contributor to Omaha's workforce.Metropolitan Community College will break ground today on a $90 million expansion aimed at providing improved job training for more students in the trades and technology fields.
The college will use a mix of private and public money to build three new buildings on the south end of the college’s Fort Omaha campus: an academic skills center, the Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology and the Construction Education Center.

I thought I saw them in the City a Council Agenda a few weeks past. Maybe it was just the plans, I can't remember, and forgot to post them...
Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms
MASSIVE surcharge on the site of those new buildings right now. Also tearing down a building where the parking lot will be.

Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms
Dirt to settle..
Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms
A Geotechnical Engineer looks at the site plan and then heads out to the site and drills down in to the ground and takes soil samples in areas he determined to need them. Depending on his findings, A large pile of dirt is placed where he thinks the ground needs more compaction. The topsoil and other non soil materials should be removed before the surcharge is placed leaving only "clean" soil. A lot of times they will stockpile the topsoil on site and it will look somewhat similar to the surcharge pile, but usually darker. The surcharge pile could be anywhere from part of the building to the whole outline of the building plus some additional area surrounding the building. I have seen them run anywhere from a few feet tall to as much as 15 feet tall on projects I have worked on. The Geotechnical Engineer determines, the area, height, and also how long the pile must sit there. There are usually plates out in the surcharge that will show how much it has settled. The dirt from the surcharge is either from a "Borrow Pit" on site or its trucked in. The dirt is usually dumped and spread out. As they are building the surcharge pile they are as compacting it too so the surcharge pile is more dense than a pile of soil that id just dumped on the ground. Most soils around this area seem to have a compaction factor of 1.3 to 1.35 meaning if you want 1 Cubic Foot of compact soil, you will actually need 1.35 cubic feet of loose soil. After they determine the soil is ready for construction, the surcharge dirt is either put back in the borrow pit or trucked away. Trucking it gets expensive too, a truck can only hold 10 CY of soil, so the number of trucks add up quick!Louie wrote:Surcharge?iamjacobm wrote:MASSIVE surcharge on the site of those new buildings right now. Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms
Agreed. While the buildings may end-up being detailed nicely, the overall layout doesn't really do much for the 30th St./Hwy 75 side. There is a strong east-west axis between the buildings that just kind of dies when it gets to 30th St. It's like there should be some sort of implied gateway there, at least.Seth wrote:Thanks for the images!

He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

Re: Ft. Omaha Dorms
I can post the interior renderings when I get home, but this space is borderline warehouse type learning space which I am sure has an effect on the design.Seth wrote:Thanks for the images!

Rendering for the Academic Skills Center. The campus continues to grow.

Is the street grid for Fort Omaha oriented to true north or geographical north?

Yes, and sadly there is nothing new to report on 30 Metropolitan. I keep going there thinking I will get a new pic, but maybe there is more dirt moved, but not much difference than since the building was removed.Taco wrote:Coyote, while you were up there did you see how the mixed use building on 30th and Fort is coming?

I was not expecting to see the absence of the parking lot to the east of the Culinary Institute, so here are the new plans for this corner of MCC the Academic Skills Center taking the lots place...
Re: Ft. Omaha Campus
Really impressive additions to MCC. Should be a great asset for Omaha for a long time.

Metro is an awesome resource for the city and these facilities look like they are the very top of the line. Those buildings would fit in on nearly any 4 year university.

Metro and EPI-USA announced their partnership Thursday at the college’s Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology on the Fort Omaha campus in north Omaha.
Metro and EPI-USA will work together to provide short classes for data center employees beginning next month. EPI-USA now calls Metro its “national training center.”
Donald Byrne, senior instructor at EPI-USA, said Metro’s working data center, designed for students to touch, operate and work on, makes the college a good spot for the training courses. The courses typically are for experienced data center workers, not novices.
He envisions Metro serving as a regional training site and eventually, if demand requires it, becoming a spot where companies from across the nation send workers.
The training courses typically last two to five days. Some employees do their training online, and others do it on-site. Byrne said workers have come from as far away as Mexico, Pakistan, Oman and Spain to use his firm’s training services.
