Theater District Idea

Post by Dusty »

Theater is big here in Omaha. We have a lot of interesting shows from opera to broadway to dance. There is a big market to grow as well. We should consider naming a section of downtown as a theater district. Most of the venues are close together. For example...Orpheum Theater 16th & Harney, Rose Theater 20th and Farnam, Skullduggery Theatre 19th and Farnam. This district would draw more people to move here and attract more theater related businesses. This could lead to an improv comedy/theater club, big costume shop, more theater schools/classes for voice, acting, and dance. A retail puppet shop with puppet shows for kids on the weekends. Also, this could lead into an outdoor amphitheater that has weekly performances like shakespeare on the green.

More ideas to add to a theater district: murder mystery diners and tons of events that showcase costumes or acting in a social setting. Event ideas would be Urban Iditarod, mustache fest, zombie or pirate day, or anything involving people acting like a certain character.

This would be completely awesome, and reminds me - whatever happened to that project including - I believe - a theater of some sort that was trying to go into that old jewelry shop on 16th north of the Orpheum?
