Re: Official: Capitol District
Capitol District has already consumed one surface lot. It's hard to compare Haymarket (more like Old Market) to this area surrounding a CenturyLink complex with arose from a rail yard. It really isn't a bad evolution. Establish your anchor convention center/arena, served by surface lots. As the surrounding area takes advantage of that traffic and grows, you begin taking back those surface lots. It may be many years yet, but I think it's clear that all of the surface parking in the area will eventually be developed. We've already seen Aksarben Village begin to consume surface lots, in a similar manner. Rome wasn't built in a day. ;) and we know how little Omaha leaders/developers are willing to speculate, they want demonstrated demand -now-. I'd say all things considered, the area is coming together remarkably well.

Addendum, didn't it arise from a lead infested industrial complex? Regardless, I will take a 200 million dollar mixed use complex any day for sure, and seeing the signs of a great young district.

Re: Official: Capitol District
Jeff, I swear if I have to drop everything and fly to Omaha and go to the library or the owh and find the special sections with the renderings of the land directly across the street from the CLink AND the renderings of Cuming Street proposed around the time of the vote I'll do it. The hope was for parking garages with retail on the first floor and residential on the upper floors across from the CLink and beautiful buildings along Cuming all the way to Creighton. Of course Rome wasn't built in a day but given the Haymarket and the Power & Light District Omaha could have had so much more of a cohesive development. And yes, it is what it is.Stargazer wrote:Capitol District has already consumed one surface lot. Re: Official: Capitol District
I have been to Beer Can Alley and The Exchange in DSM. Both are downtown in an old brick building that has 3 floors of bars. They aren't exactly what I would call upscale there, but that may be a case of being in an older building. The Beer Can Alley bar had a small stage to host country shows I presume, The Exchange had a ticker above the bar to show the prices of the drinks which would go up or down based on the number of sales.
Re: Official: Capitol District
I am excited that they have some announced and coming. Too bad they could not be there now with the ice rink. Also thankful we are getting a permanent outdoor screen.

Re: Official: Capitol District
Has anyone used the Capitol District garage lately? I see that they have three electric car charging stations there. I believe these are the first public charging stations downtown. If they do not constantly have gas cars parked there I could consider buying a place at the Ford Lofts again.
Side note, Beebe & Runyan and Ford Lofts have now both turned down my request for me to pay for a charging station there.

Less than what was previously expected but still looks sharp.

Liquor lisence requests for Annie's, Beer Can Alley and The Exchange in the city council agenda. Hopefully they can get open for the NCAA regionals.

Actually, that screen is so high def that it just looks like there is a scissor lift in the way. It's really just a national geographic film on scissor lifts.

bar-hoppin' with friends seems like the plan for me
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

Mike Moylan from Shamrock was on Grow Omaha last saturday. Apparently they control the how the "Entertainment District" in the Capitol district will work. Apparently its not a set size or hours, they determine them by the hours/size depending on events.

I haven't been to P&L on a random week night enough to know, but Lincoln's Railyard has kind of an honor system drinking outside situation on random week days. Seems to me that would work well enough then have staffed people checking IDs during bigger events and weekends?Brad wrote:Mike Moylan from Shamrock was on Grow Omaha last saturday. We will find out soon first 3 bars are supposed to be open for St Patrick's day. I will probably avoid that mess, but plan on checking it out the next weekend for the NCAA Regional.

Re: Official: Capitol District
So we went to Annie's during the festivities yesterday. That place was wild. Had a vibe much like some Lincoln bars, younger crowd being the main reason, but wow was it alive. The bars here have a lot of potential and it seems like people were very excited for it to be there. Going to continue nursing my hangover now.
Re: Official: Capitol District
That’s too bad I’d rather that area have a New York or Los Angeles bar scene vibe. Maybe Lot B will have a better atmosphere.Louie wrote:So we went to Annie's during the festivities yesterday. It was so packed I didn't bother to try and get in there. The courtyard was nice though and will be even better with a little sunshine. Already picturing the CWS games playing on the big screen this summer. Popped my head in Beer Can Alley. Normal open bar, had a stage for small country shows I imagine. The Exchange wasn't open, but looks pretty much built out. It looks fine. None of the bars are anything groundbreaking, the big selling point will be the courtyard.Louie wrote:So we went to Annie's during the festivities yesterday. That place was wild.
