What "Dundee Red Brick Mixed Use Building" isn't catchy enough?

I love the dichotomy in scale between the first picture and the third. Completely fits in the first and totally dominates the strip mall in the third.

Yeah, it's awesome how much it makes the strip mall look out of place.iamjacobm wrote:I love the dichotomy in scale between the first picture and the third. Completely fits in the first and totally dominates the strip mall in the third.

I noticed that work is being done on the inside of the white building just to the East of Max Walker in Dundee. Has anyone heard anything about something coming into there?

Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
I think Underwood Village is the name of the strip mall.
Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
Oh yeah it says "underwood village" then "open during construction" my bad thought that was the name of the new place.

I like the pilasters on the side walls. They echo some of the historic building styles and break up what would otherwise be a huge flat wall of brick. I think this building will look great here.

I was going to say the same thing, it's the small things like this that make a huge difference how the final product looks.Seth wrote:I like the pilasters on the side walls. Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
There was a recent OWH article about building signs that got me thinking if they might do something like that on this buuilding, or if they even do that sort of advertising anymore...
Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
Blackstone painted ads for the district on the side of their buildings. In 50 years I am sure they will look faded!Coyote wrote:There was a recent OWH article about building signs that got me thinking if they might do something like that on this buuilding, or if they even do that sort of advertising anymore...

I'm excited to hear more about the restaurant going in here. The World Herald article claimed that the menu was finished back in March.
Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
Article in OWH today names a restaurant led by Willy Thiesen and the former chef at M's pub and a pediatric medical clinic as tenants. Restaurant hopes to open by August.

Building looks great, not completely sold on the large front windows yet. They just look too plain for that building. Maybe it will look better once completed.

Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
A few observations:
First, I love the amount of brick used here and the detail on the south and east sides - really makes it fit into the neighborhood.
Second, the size of this building will take some getting used to. I have been by every few weeks and it still looks huge.
Finally, I don't know if it has been mentioned before in this thread, but that west wall really lends itself to a sweet mural of some kind. I wonder if the owners have considered it. I think it would help the new building with some character.
Overall, great to see this getting close to completion.

I am pleased by the look and size of this building.
Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
I have heard a couple people lately complain about the size of this building................
Plain and simple, if there was a 2 or 3 story building on the KFAB lot, there would be Zero issues with the size of this building, it would blend right in. Until that surface lot is filled in, it does stick out a bit.

Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
That size building is about perfect IMO. I agree that the parking lot doesn't help it seem connected and then when you add the approach from the west which is at the bottom of a hill and that it is right next to such a nondescript strip mall makes it easy to seem out of place.
I wonder if this will scare the neighborhood away from any future proposals on the parking lot or for a strip mall redevelopment...still a lot of opportunity to make Dundee better IMO.

Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
Totally, if you look at in the context of the there building on that street, its perfect.
I sure hope the KFAB lot is next, before the strip mall.

Wow. They did an excellent job of blending that place in.

Re: Grandpa's C Mart - Dundee
I think it looks really nice, and a couple more buildings in the open lots will really tie it in. It actually looks more to me like the downtown buildings left standing after adjacent buildings have been demolished, rather than too big for the space. More like it's asking for some companions ;-)
