There are far more barns and other agricultural outbuildings that are just burned down and buried. Large-scale agriculture has rendered them obsolete. Aside from the few farmers and landowners who use them for random storage or keep them for sentimental reasons, the rest are going to be demolished anyway. Better to be have useful materials salvaged than go up in smoke.Brad wrote:As someone who loves barns, I hate people using barn wood. I know that sometimes barns can't be saved, but there are also people out there tearing down barns for their wood and that really upsets me off!Garrett wrote:If they use recovered barn wood to build it, that would be cool as |expletive|. If its just normal plywood, blegh.

I wonder how people are going to feel about the corten siding that is up now. It is definitely unique for the city.

I talked with one of their sound guys this morning.
They did a walk through yesterday, and they should be moving from the OM to their new digs in a few days.

Here is a picture from their facebook page showing the sign installation beginning.
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
I think the Cor-tin cladding will end up looking really cool. I'm sure there will be some naysayers though, since rust is associated so closely with decay. The run-off from the rust can leave streaks across regular concrete sidewalks too....another thing people might not like. If they used stained concrete for the walks, or some other kind of pavers, the cor-tin run-off would be less noticeable.
The terminal building at the Lincoln Airport airport was made out of Cor-tin too...back in the late 60s or 70s. Seems like there are a few other buildings or structures around made of the stuff too can't remember where exactly.

He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

I drove by the building the other day, it looks awesome. I apologize for making fun of your original popsicle stick rendering Bluebarn.

I think the building looks amazing, especially for its intended use.
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
I wonder if some developer would try and tackle a rehab of their old building. I am pretty sure the upper floors are empty.Coyote wrote:I talked with one of their sound guys this morning.

After a year or so, it will corrode to a consistent color.iamjacobm wrote:I wonder how people are going to feel about the corten siding that is up now. It is definitely unique for the city.
Proper design with weathering steel includes detailing drainage to manage water and prevent staining. An example is the Daley center in Chicago, which includes special drainage grates around the weathering steel columns to channel rusty water away from the granite pavers, where it would cause staining:

Just talked to Bill Grennan of Blue Barn, and he says they are on target for opening night Sept. 15. The stage is still a hole in the ground, but its coming along.
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
Does anyone one know whats gonna happen with the old blue barn in the old market?

I can't believe that the adjacent apartment building was built with practically no south facing windows. Are they aiming for vampire tenants?
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
I think for the time being, there is more to look at to the north and east.

My point is that south facing windows will let in more sunlight than windows facing any other direction.RNcyanide wrote:I think for the time being, there is more to look at to the north and east.

They probably built to the property line.

The south side of the building is where the staircases and elevator are located. I wonder how much it will cost to live in this building since it only has 3 units
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
So many power lines, light poles, traffic lights in front of this place... The view from 10th and pacific is absolutely awful! I know it will never happen, but I wish there was a way to simplify all that on to one single light pole.

They just started building the Stage...
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
Here is a photo from tonight. Still too many light poles, in an ideal world, I would like to be a few more feet to my left. I need a wider lens (like Canon's new 11mm) to get the Boxcar ten out of the "B" in the Blue Barn sign...

Was there supposed to be an open bay built in the new Bluebarn building, for a restaurant?

Hah! I guess we're just old. Anyways, back in the early 70's, the Sweetness n' Light Satirical Theater, on 10th & Howard (next to Satan's Pizza), had a watering hole called the Korova Milk Bar, the design of which copied the look from the movie (A Clockwork Orange).Coyote wrote:I heard that their specialty, Moloko Vellocet is killer!Linkin5 wrote:Korova Milk Bar.nativeomahan wrote:Any word as to what might occupy that space?

Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
I tried to see if I could get a sneak preview if the inside of Blue Barn, but just found out that the Omaha World Herald has arranged with them the first rights to publish pics, so there will be no pics till after they fulfill this obligation. I hope they got paid well for this privilege...
Re: Blue Barn moving to 10th and Pacific
Don't get too upset, that's typical with most projects. I have tried cold calling and also submitting written requests in the past and as far as I can remember, it has never worked. I have even asked people I know to drop their names and that still has not worked. I have safety training and protective gear for construction sites, as well as insurance on not only my camera gear, I also have a liability policy in case my camera gear did any damage to the property I am photographing.
All the projects that I have got to tour over the years, with the exception of a few, I have had a previous business relationship or friendship with someone closely involved in the project. Only a few have cold called me and asked about hiring me to photograph for them, and that was usually after a recommendation from a client or friend.
I don't let it bother me, I just keep taking photos of the exteriors of the buildings and enjoy the opportunities when I do get to go inside.

How'd you get us on the BK for that testing?

I'm chuckling a little trying to picture an instance where a camera could cause enough damage to submit a claim.Brad wrote:...I also have a liability policy in case my camera gear did any damage to the property I am photographing.
