Omaha officials broke ground today on a $12.2 million project to revive a two-square-block area that includes part of the historic North 24th Street commercial corridor.
The new “Fair Deal Urban District” will replace blighted properties and empty lots with apartment housing for seniors, single homes for families and an arts center.
Anchoring the project is the old Fair Deal Cafe, referred to fondly as the “Black City Hall” because of its reputation as the gathering place years ago for north Omaha leaders, deal-makers and visiting politicians.
The Fair Deal Urban District marks the beginning of the broader, $1.43 billion North Omaha Village Revitalization Plan, which was announced in the summer of 2011 and is to be completed in phases and funded by a combination of public and private funds.

I love this sort of development, beautifying an area of town that is sorely in need of redevelopment to provide growth for the residents there! The style doesn't look half bad either, although I would have liked to see more renderings...

I wonder why it has taken four years to get to this part of the project?
The 40 Unit senior apartments and townhomes are already finished.

John Chapman - WOWT wrote:Those plans include knocking down the old Fair DealCafe and replacing it with a new fair deal, a health food store and eight new "micro-businesses."
The micro-business will be located in shipping containers. They will have walls, floors, electricity and running water and will house businesses.

Drips Coffee Shop and Vinyl record store that is in Council Bluffs have opened a second location across the street here at 2205 N 24th and is now open for business.
There have been several efforts to revitalize North 24th Street in Omaha. One of the latest efforts is thanks to a pair of twin brothers. Together, it's a labor of love that's bringing them closer together. One of the twins is Vershan Jackson, a former Nebraska Husker tight end. His brother is Antoine Jackson.
You can find Jackson's Fair Deal Cafe at the Fair Deal Village Marketplace on North 24th St.
