I always thought it would have been a great spot for Joe's Crab Shack, but it would not work as the 2nd location in town.

I wonder if one of the big KC BBQ chains like Jack Stack would work?

How about just a Marina...or a true concert venue?

Jack Stack is considering opening a location in Omaha in the next year.

And we ate there at Chrismastime and absolutely loved the food and ambiance. But they weren't very busy. The beers are hit and miss. Some weren't bad at all.
The problem is, Omahans quite literally must drive past every other restaurant downtown and in the Old Market in order to get here. It is forgotten. I don't know of any advertising campaign they have done.

That's been an often circulated rumor. I'd love to see it happen. They are very slow and methodical. Articles on their new place that just opened in Lee's Summit quoted the owners on how long it took for them to pull the trigger there.

A well-known chain with a good reputation like Jack Stack should do good here, if the powers who be decide that another restaurant should be tried here.

Is is this place officially closed?

I didn't have my lap top Monday night so I had to cut out of the CWS in the middle of the 8th to run home and process the game photos. I park in lot D, so I circled around the riverfront on my out. The place was dark...

Hope so. It does tend to close early on some days. Can't get our hopes up quite yet.

According to their website, they're closed on Mondays. You'd think they would adjust those hours during the CWS, but apparently not enough traffic that way to bother.

What do we give them, another 6 months? :hi:

To get the eviction notice it is most likely an extended period of unpaid rent.

So, let the speculation begin. What next.

They were already 90 days behind in rent, and they asked the city for another one month extension. The city said no.
Many of us predicted this outcome. And it is a shame, as the place served good food at a reasonable price in a nice atmosphere, in my opinion. However they never marketed themselves, and the fact that they struggled to make rent in the SUMMER months is astounding. The summer is when they should have made money hand over fist, with their great patio and deck.

I wonder what the city will do next?

For anything to survive it sure needs to be marketed correctly or be a place that people know and will want to go

At this point for anything to survive they should have events on the patio / river area and be recognizable

Perhaps a Joe's crab shack, Hard Rock, rainforest cafe, cheddars, elephant bar

Considering the frequency of meeting people who had them play games with their credit cards and Pinpoint rewards, I am shocked that the DA hasnt busted them for financial fraud and theft. We got the treatment and never went back.

The OWH story says that the Storz has NEVER made a rent payment so if that is correct it is more than 90 days.

The story says that the lease called for starting to pay rent in 2014. Rent was to be $6,166.66 per month

Maybe it's time to think different from the same old same old here. Since the city owns it maybe we could connect with MCC and turn it into a culinary startup space. Instead of the one massive concept get a number of smaller concepts with recent culinary school grads that want to test something new and innovative. Make the space like the food hall at Westroads but instead of stable concepts there is an ever changing option. One month a startup might move out of their space and another entirely new idea could move in. Make it about community and innovation and something new and exciting. Another place with $20 run of the mill entrees just is so played out in Omaha.

Now we have got to the crux of the problem. I can't think of any place thats going to make it downtown, with 6000 a month rent. Game over folks. Two of the most busy restaurants I see in town are Cheddars and Texas Road House and I doubt even they could make a profit downtown with a 6000 a month rent.

If those are two of the busiest restaurants you see I do not want to live in your part of town. Come East of 90th once.

If it isn't a destination it isn't going to work in this location. It needs to be something unique to Omaha.

A few Suggestions:
Strip Club
Brothel
Sports Book
Bar with 24 hour liquor license
Recreational Marijuana Dispensary

I'm sure they could do anything for the right amount of money... I don't know what they would need to do or exactly what is contaminated. You would think if they built the parks service building and Riverfront place, they could figure something out there. I would like to see something with multiple tenants that could draw people 12-15 hours a day and year round.

Cheddar's is actually pretty busy. Their giant parking lot is usually always full.

According to DCGIS, the building is about 16,000 SF. If their rent is $6,100/mo x 12 = $73,200/year that is only 73,200/16,000 = $4.57 SF/YR which is very cheap. By comparison, decent space at 13th & Jones, near the Old Market goes for $14-18/SF/YR. for 24,000 SF.

http://commercialsearch.realtor.com/Search/Results

The place just never took off...never had good reviews and never advertised even with the sweetheart rent deal from the city. It didn't help that they stopped holding events at Lewis & Clark Landing, such as Playing With Fire. But there are still a lot of things going on at the CLINK.

I did some other math... They paid like $200 per day in rent. I think most restaurants would do more than that on their slowest hour of the day.

Average retail rent is $13/sf/yr. Just another metric to show that no Grandpa, their rent wasn't out of line, it was the complete opposite.

http://www.loopnet.com/Nebraska/Omaha-C ... al-Estate/

That said, 16,000 square feet is a huge space to make a restaurant work, even with the reduced rent, and that is part of the problem with that space.

More residential would be great here, or an expanded Lewis and Clark landing. Make it an outdoor stage even.
