I vote to help finance a sentry turret that activates when it detects someone trying to break into the machine.. as you can see.. this is a perfect solution to the problem

heck, I am ready to bring George Zimmerman up here and rent him the row house closest to the bridge.
:sarcasm:

Seriously though, I just can't believe how dis-respectful of other people's property some idiots are.

What I find more interesting is how could there be enough value in the products inside to make it worth trying to break into? There are many other places where you could attempt to rob and actually have a good chance of getting something instead of just wasting your energy smashing a machine thats fortified to protect from theft? Me thinks some people just like breaking things perhaps..

Well the fact that they smashed the bus stop too, I think they just like to break stuff...

Curious --- how close is the bus stop and vending machine to some of the town houses and towers. Is it too far away that some of the residents wouldn't have heard something and called it in?

Interesting -- either they are very soundproof or people don't want to get involved

Probably at little bit of both...

Between Planes, Train, and everything else down there, I am sure the rooms are fairly well insulated and people are probably a bit use to noise.

They haven't been there since the vending machine went in.  There are a few under the bridge near the B-Cycle station though.

Thanks for the pics.  I was just coming here to say that to make matters worse they still haven't cleaned up the broken glass on the ground yet.

Really???  I thought the riverfront/HofA Park had dedicated care takers that worked 7 days a week?

Yep, the entire area under the bus stop is covered in broken glass and next to the vending machine there is a cardboard box filled with broken glass.  The box is breaking and the glass has spilled out onto the concrete.  Looks absolutely terrible.

It would take like 10 mins to clean it up...

I went by there yesterday also and was astonished that yes, the glass was still just in a cardboard box, and showed little sign of an actual cleanup. You beat to posting your pics. Thanks - they were better than mine.

I heard the sad news today that although the Bob Kerrey Bridge had promised to stay permanently in Nebraska it is moving to New York.  I will miss that Bridge.

Omaha City Council votes to spend $101,000 on plans for 'Baby Bob' bridge

from OWH

A direct link between downtown Omaha and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is inching closer to reality.

Tuesday, the Omaha City Council voted 6-1 to spend $101,000 on initial engineering work for a bridge that would be built over Riverfront Drive and the railroad tracks on the west side of the Bob Kerrey Bridge. The city will use federal funds for the rest of the approximately $500,000 engineering project.

This is flipping awesome. I don't know if it's realized how important this will be for the area. For example the troglodytes from the world series can now knuckle drag all the way to Hanafan park.

Not sure.  But you are dealing with the City, the Army Corps of Engineers, Union Pacific, and others...  Plus to be ADA compliant and clear the Road and Railroad, you are probably looking at a 600'-700' long bridge.

This is great!

I vote that we sentence the criminals who keep vandalizing the vending machine and bus stop to do the excavation work.  Give them each a shovel and tell them they can vandalize a few thousand cubic yards of soil into the correct placement and compaction.  The cops from Futurama would made satisfactory supervision.

That's also the rough number in Nucor Steel magazine ads highlighting the cost savings of revising the design from a concrete structure to a steel one.

So, this news must explain what has been going on behind the CLink, that must be a soil boring machine that has been getting samples recently?

This has been in the works for years.  Its just been sitting in the queue of projects waiting for money.

The firm who designed the Big Bob is designing this one, so the design should match.  I wouldn't expect anything so extravagant to take away from the big bridge, nor would I want it to.

I'm just excited to have a connection between the riverfront and north downtown.

No, there was a story on the WOWT news last night that behind the Clink is a new Cell Phone Network for the Clink and the Trade.
