Ha! Wicker Park was a legit hipster enclave in the '80s and '90s, before anyone knew what hipsters were, and largely still is. But like all things hipster, it's gentrifying and becoming mainstream. When Real World filmed here in the early 2000s, I think it was the only time the show was ever protested due to fear that wide exposure to the neighborhood would lead to accelerated gentrification. Lately the bros of Lakeview have been getting priced out and are migrating this way. Bucktown's wealth seems to be subtly and effectively creeping in as well, The hipsters of Wicker Park have fought the invasion hard and sometimes violently, but are slowly losing the battle and moving on to places like Logan Square and Bridgeport...or Pilsen if they're really hardcore.

As for the moving of the hipsters, you're dead on about Pilsen. I did extensive work with the Pilsen Alliance a year ago studying the neighborhood, and boy, is it on the verge. A little bit of irony, considering that people getting priced out of Wicker are now moving and pricing people out of Pilsen. The cycle certainly continues, eh? And yeah, Wicker does clean up with the brunch spots.... so does Lincoln Park. I'm sure Chad and Trixie just LOOOOVE their new brunch stop in Wicker though.

The cycle certainly does continue. I've determined that goes like this: Blue collar/immigrant whites are replaced by African-Americans, who are replaced by Hispanics, who are priced out by white hipsters, who are priced out by yuppies and bros.

Anyone remember back in the early 90s when Otis 12 (DJ with Z-92, prior to Todd and Tyler) started this great campaign to save the theater? I really think it probably helped at the time and would love to see the media kind of pick up the cause again. What I think would be especially cool is UNO could go in on this either directly or via joint partnership and run it through their College of Fine Arts perhaps.

Or a consortium of local groups from historic to art to community. Omaha is a power house when it come to philanthropy and given the significance I bet there's plenty of people willing to help.

Really this is owner fatigue more than that the money isn't there imo at least. If a motivated person really wanted to keep this open they could start a kickstarter and it would get a ton of support.

The Dundee Theater and remaining buildings on the block were just purchased by Susie Buffett. I will consider the Dundee protected at this point! Can expect good things will happen.

It would actually be nice for Film Streams to have a hand so these two can work together rather than compete for the limited run films. Whatever gets the reel rolling again I am for!

I never got the impression they competed, it seamed they both had they're own thing going. But whatever happens they need to bring back the cult classics ASAP!

I am a member as well. That is why I am frustrated by a group of people who think narrowcasting scheduled films is the way to go. We should expand the audience for artistic films not just keep them confined to the mindless followers who feel that dull and overly earnest movies are somehow better because the 7 of you are the only ones that "get" them.

I went to the Dundee quite a bit when it was the only indie theater in town. It's ONE theater, dude. Why should you care? Would you drive all the way from West O to the Dundee to see Star Wars anyway?The place would probably be torn down without the intervention of Payne and Susan Buffett. I probably shouldn't get involved here, especially on bigredmed's behalf since he once called me "annoying", but I think what a lot of people want from the Dundee is for it to be what it was before. It showed stuff that wouldn't necessarily be in the multiplexes (The Red Riding Trilogy, Never Let Me Go, My Dog Tulip, Shame) that weren't the type of art house movies typically shown at Film Streams. They also did midnight showings of The Room, Rocky Horror, etc. It was a nice mix of good movies and goofball fun. That's the appropriate niche for it to fill. Bergman retrospectives are great, and Film Streams does a great job with those sorts of things, but there's a place for what the Dundee was.
