I would sure think that the people of Benson would welcome something like Trader Joe. It's waaaaayyyy above Bucky's on the food chain. They have a niche that things like Baker's and Hy Vee don't have and they have a reputation of treating their employees well.
And they are owned by Aldi's.  (Seriously)

Can't wait for some Yuppie to walk into a Trader Joes and have to deposit a quarter to borrow a shopping cart.

Benson would be better off with a big Aldi's than a Trader Joe's considering the average income from the neighborhoods to the north and east of that location.  WIC and SNAP just don't seem to go as far at a place like Whole Foods or Trader Joes.
I think the idea behind a Trader Joe's is to enhance the area, make it more attractive for people with a higher income.  A Bucky's or big Aldi's doesn't do much to attract a different resident to the area.

Anyways, I always thought that would be a good spot for an apartment building.  Gas station is a bummer.
Spot on.

How is a gas station any worse than the dense cluster of bars nearby?

From what I can read between the lines,  the hipsters of "Bensonhurst" are OK with noise and congestion when it is caused by cool people, but not when it is caused by something that might make the icky poor people from north of the Radial Hwy come south.

Maybe it's my childhood in Benson (sans the "-hurst"), where I got an eyeful of how liberals live vs preach when I lived north of the Radial and east of Benson High.  The cool people moved their kids from Clifton Hill to Rose Hill.  The kids left behind, were just that.  All the urban hipsters in the Country Club neighborhood love to condescend to the people in Millard, etc, but in their hearts, they would wall off the north side of Gallagher park and put up armed gaurds to keep out the rif-raf.

Protesting a gas station is just more of the same old "I am a cool Urbanist, therefore whatever I say is by definition not racist, even when it is."

Bucky's should build it with extra lights, a sound system playing the Urban radio station as Musak, and dedicate it to Ernie Chambers.

I don't spend much time in Benson, but Google maps shows me a BP on 52nd and NW Radial HWY and a Sinclair on 58th and Maple. Is another gas station that close really necessary? Seems like a grocery store, or something, would be more beneficial to the area.

Trader Joes? BENSONHURST?

Good god my hipsterdouche radar just blew up.

I lived there growing up, and my family moved when I was about 14. Trader Joes isn't even close to what that community needs. They need a good, nicely priced, grocery store. A Trader Joes is just mind boggling.

Hahaha this made my morning. I personally don't care for TJ's. They are too expensive and I feel like they have less variety than other bigger grocery stores. I think I Bag n' Gag or a Superslaver would work fine there.

Louie's to No Frills - 2.1 Miles
Louie's to Baker's - 2.2 Miles
Louie's to the New 50th & Ames Walmart - 1.6 Miles

Grocery Store probably not going to happen...

Then turn the space into apartments, or other retail.

This isn't a racist or anti poverty thing at all, the fact that it went there is ridiculous.  The only thing this "controversy" is people being tired of the same old cr*p development near what could be one of the city's most marketable destinations if we would bother to drive a little more interesting and worthwhile investment up there.

There is one thing I can agree on with gas stations. Gas stations, by market design, saturate certain areas, usually very close high-density residential. Not only that, is they have zero problem dumping a loaction, only to dig another hole for fuel, throw up some lousy steal building, only in an attempt to move 50ft closer to a convenient vehicle access.

I don't live in Benson, so I guess my opinion is worthless. But it's annoying to listen to them whine and whine, then request an alternative which brings all the same problems.

TJ's here are mostly in working class neighborhoods.  The one near
me is patronized by lots of Hispanic, Asian and African immigrants, military, and working schlubs like me.  I go there because I can buy a half-gallon of milk for $1.97, a loaf of the best pre-sliced packaged bread I've ever had ( Tuscan Panna) for $2.69, a great bottle of table wine for $3.69----the prices are good and they have good quality stuff.  A half-gallon of milk at the local Giant (our local Hi-Vee) is $2.69.  So call me a hipster/yuppie, or maybe a yipster ( I like the sound of that).  Anyway, I think Omaha can easily support a couple more. And I think a TJ's would be a good fit for Benson, or even South Omaha--- and I think you'd be surprised by the clientele's racial makeup.

Sounds like yours is more like the parent company.  Except for booze, Aldi's stores serve that role in Omaha.

Nope that sounds like Trader Joe's to me.  It's reasonably priced.  I think the one in Omaha so far is the exception because the first landed at One Pacific Place.  TJ's is definitely not primarily an upscale only place to shop.

The nerve... Even Ward Cleaver would lay a pretty solid beatdown for something like that.

When I can find their stuff cheaper at Wally World, yes, I do find them expensive.

Proposed Bucky's Wins First-Round Approval
KPTM wrote:If all of the details can be ironed out, the new Bucky's would take over the old and iconic Louis Market at the corner of 58th and NW Radial Highway, which has now sat empty for the better part of a year and a half. "I like the idea of a big investment happening there," said Benson advocate Kurt Goetzinger.  "Unfortunately, not everybody is happy about that."
