WoodmenLife Tower

Post by skinzfan23 »

Woodmen Tower, dedicated 45 years ago, aided the rebirth of downtown Omaha
Today that 30-story, 478-foot symbol celebrates its 45th year since its dedication as the Woodmen Tower. In honor of the event, and the Woodmen of the World’s 124th anniversary, the tower will feature its new LED lighting in a show starting at 10 p.m. today.

The cost- and energy-efficient LED lighting recently installed on the tower will be featured in a display starting at 10 p.m. today. The lighting is easily changed and can illuminate the building for different events and observations, Woodmen of the World says.

Thought this was an awesome picture from the article. It is Omaha's version of the construction worker above the skyline.

I love the look of the old Woodmen Tower and of course Jobbers Canyon in the background.

Notice the "Kilpatrick's" sign towards the right. The last one of those I remember was I believe at Westroads?

Was the tallest building between Chicago and the West Coast at the time it was built.

WTH did they tear it down?! That looks like it was an awesome building.

Also nice on the use of the spoil, I didn't know that existed.

By the way, if anyone was downtown tonight after 10pm, you could see they had the new LED lights on. I didn't like them at first because the white light had a purplish hue to it. But when we just drove by, each side was broken up into 3 colors (red, white and blue) Looked pretty cool, especially when looking towards downtown when driving south on 480. Maybe somebody was down there to grab a pic.

O and for some reason the north side of the building had no lights on at all.

That will certainly change the skyline from here on out. Honestly though I have always been a fan of the classic white light for Woodmen, I hope they don't get to crazy with the new lights.

The one thing I didn't like was the fact that its harder to read "Woodmen" on the building with the new lighting. Above the lettering, there were shadows that made it hard to clearly make out the letters. Maybe they will adjust and fix that with time.

I'm sitting in Heartland of America Park looking at Woodmen and the lights aren't on yet. Were they just a one time thing?

I am in Bellevue and as of 11 pm it looked like the building was lit up. Did the lights ever come on?

I was under the impression that the colored lights were just going to be used for special events, and the white would remain the standard. I think this weekend was them testing out some colors.

I could be wrong, though.

Yeah, I think you are right. The article in the paper stated they were lighting it for the 45th anniversary, but the white is going to remain. They are only going to use the colors for special events. By the way, RNcyanide, was the light white or did it have a purplish hue to it? On Friday night before they turned on the colors, the lights were on but they looked almost like a florescent light does.

The new lighting casts a different shade of white on woodmen, for obvious reasons. I also noticed that first national had green lights integrated into the lighting around the curved part near the top. not the windows that are illuminated during christmas, etc. these were lights on the exterior of the building. maybe they arent new, and i had just never noticed them before.

I feel a little off-put seeing a bright red middle finger looking at me from the skyline. If they're trying to shy away from the green theme, they should go with orange, purple, and yellow too. A little softer on the eyes 8).

Actually, a lot of buildings in Chicago do something similar. They'll all light their antennas/spires for some kind of cause. Not as drastic as the whole building, of course.

Yeah thats exactly what I meant. I know that some major cities do it, especially for sports when their teams make the playoffs or win a championship or something but I have seen very few light up the whole building. Definitely not any in NE or IA that do.

Color-changing lighting is getting much easier to do now, with LED technology.
