1501 Howard St

Postby skinzfan23 » Tue Nov 04, 2014 3:26 pm

Just noticed today that this building (currently occupied by Copycat) is for sale. I would love to see it restored similar to the Meyer and Raapke building (where Wilson and Washburn is now) on 14th and Harney.

$862,488

It would be great to see someone buy this and replace the windows and take off all the ugly brown paint on the brick.

That building would probably look fantastic if they pulled all that paint off.

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that building was actually home to George Joslyn's newspaper business for a time. Cool building with some serious history to it!

That would be a great spot for so many things... I hope it falls into the right hands.

I hope so too. The area between the Old Market and 480 (especially along Howard) is so ripe for rehab. Looks like there have been lots of "improvements" to the building. Might be a gut rehab if/when someone purchases it.

That building has a ton of potential. It's sad to look at it now. How the heck could anyone consciously decide the piecemeal "improvements" made to it over the years were a good idea? Just goes to show you that buildings rarely look any better than they did on the day of the ribbon cutting, at least until a savior comes along.

I would wager something startup related. Maybe an accelerator program goes here.

Great to see it sold. Hopefully they get rid of that ugly brown paint and restore all the windows.

Love that something is finally happening to the building. Not sure what the yellow paint is in the middle of the building on the rendering. I would love for the paint to all be completely stripped off to the original brick.

According to the loopnet listing, this building will be 125 years old in 2017.

It would also be nice if the parking lot across the street to the north (behind the Orpheum) could be redeveloped as well.

Sorry, I don't. It was sent in an email newsletter and it doesn't appear to be posted online anywhere.

Storied history is unearthed while planning restoration of downtown Omaha building

The Pyrovolakis property, it turns out, had been built originally as a carriage factory for one of Omaha’s pioneer blacksmiths. Among other owners were the prominent George A. Joslyn and Allen C. Scott, who invented a version of the modern parachute.

If all goes as hoped, the three-story structure would open in 2018, renovated into 20 market-rate upper-floor apartments and two ground-floor commercial bays, one likely a restaurant.

Huge windows and 1893 patterns would be restored on the 35,000-square-foot structure. Layers of paint would be removed from the brick facade. Old elevator and fire doors would be preserved, said Joe Saniuk of AO, the local architectural firm partnering with Dicon Corp.

IF that comes close to the rendering that will be nice. In the rendering the one side is mostly grey. Is that side all brick too, that is what it looks like. Any idea if it too will be a restored brick surface or gray like the rendering?

Good to see another one in the mix. My 15 year old note and photo says no known units but good possibility for future use.

Let hope this project is still moving forward. It originally stated that the building would be ready by 2018. I don't think there has been any recent movement here.
