UNO's “Center for Excellence in Education”

UNO's “Center for Excellence in Education” (68th and Mercy Road)

Aksarben Village site to become UNO education center

Image
A grassy tract on the south side of Aksarben Village — once occupied by an industrial equipment firm — is poised to become an extension of the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus.
More specifically, a “Center for Excellence in Education” is to rise at the five-acre site.
The center would house elements such as the UNO Early Childhood Education Center, shared classrooms for the Buffett Early Childhood Institute and UNO College of Education and rental space for Metropolitan Community College and the Avenue Scholars Foundation.
UNO Chancellor John Christensen, in his State of the University Address in late October, noted the plan to establish an excellence center by 2020.

Wonder if this will be a stepping stone to further develop the Chili Green's Property?

It's crazy how much they've expanded and how much they plan to. One day we might give Lincoln a run for their money :;):

Haha until you see what UNL is doing on the old fair grounds.

This sounds like a good project though. UNO always makes attractive buildings and this will just further integrate the campus with the village.

Sounds like this will be a 3 story building. I saw something in an article that UNO will lease the entire 1st floor and half the 3rd floor.

I hate checkerboard campuses. and the regents will never let UNO surpass UNL, UNL the flagship campus.

Spend more money while the students and their parents suck wind. For this semester I paid over *800 in FEEs. Now during orientation they tell the students all these FREE services. They are not free, they are paid for in the FEES which you have NO CHOICE in paying or not. If you say I will not use the health center, don't charge me for that there is no choice. Builiding another buildling?????? Who do you think is paying for that????

So they work precisely like taxes, then. Taxes you're going to pay forever and ever and ever.

In late fall my husband saw some activity on the parcel across the creek W of the park. Originally UNO was going to build there but decided not to. Could it be there?

That was my thought, given the landscaping, 6800 Mercy, owned by the NE Foundation.

It looks like the Board of Regents sold that land to Aksarben Future Trust in 2017.

Maybe somebody can remember, but wasn't this lot supposed to eventually become some sort of childhood learning center?

TIF was rescinded in 2018. Is it still in the plans.
