Before you get too zealous about this lot, appreciate the cast iron facade in lieu of a 16 story global headquarters.

Don't give OPA |expletive|. That's like caving to a kid in a toy store who is having a fit. Build the parking garage and invite OWH and patrons of Capital to have cheap rates.
When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you're doing his will.

Found this section very interesting. And she referenced the controversy over HDR’s proposed downtown tower. In order for the company to obtain the land, the city was going to acquire three century-old buildings, including the historic Christian Specht building, and transfer them to the group that operates the Holland Center. That group, Omaha Performing Arts, wanted to build an expansion and a parking garage on the site.
But now, Stothert says, “I still will pledge as long as I am mayor that the Christian Specht building will not be demolished for corporate use.”
One of Mello’s largest financial backers is former World-Herald publisher John Gottschalk, the chairman of the arts group.

Re: Holland's Greenspace
I think Gotti and OPA are over their jumping the gun on this land use issue and probably regret the whole episode, but have major butt hurt over the way Stothert dealt with them. His/their donation to the Mello campaign has nothing to do with the Specht Building, but everything to do with payback. Hello Omaha Politics....

Wait till Mort Sullivan hear's about this! haha
Re: Holland's Greenspace
A nonprofit arts society in Cleveland is moving forward with developing a high rise apartment tower on a surface lot that they own that includes...a parking garage.

Apartments over a parking garage? What sorcery is this? Only in the most preposterous of novels is this a thing! Such a farce! The Omaha Performing Arts Society requires precisely one uninterrupted city block for expansion or else such things are utterly impossible! Impossible I say! Fibble fabble!

Re: Holland's Greenspace
There are scenarios in many major cities where institutions such this WISH! they had land set aside. So I don’t blame them its a very wise long term strategic move. And we wouldn’t get more then a five story building anyway..

Re: Holland's Greenspace
Not the Holland space but Omaha Performing Arts is tearing down another 110+ year old building (built in 1905) next to the Orpheum for 10 more parking spaces. Although nothing significant about the building, I hate seeing more of Omaha's history being torn down, especially for parking.

Omaha Performing Arts plans to raze former strip joint near Orpheum Theater
The Omaha Performing Arts Society plans to demolish a former strip joint that's kitty-corner from the Omaha Police Department and behind the Orpheum Theater. Omaha Performing Arts bought the building and adjacent parking lot in 2012 for $1.3 million, according to county records. A driveway for Orpheum loading docks runs through the parking lot parcel. The parking lot has 40 spaces. Removing the building would add about 10 more.

Wonder if they have plans for a garage eventually.

What's the joke? Anything that was originally worth saving is long gone. The west 1/2 of the block is already a parking garage. They might as well develop the rest with 4-5 floors of parking with 5-10 floors of apartments/condos above that, and maybe a bar/restaurant/coffee shop at street level.
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.
...and then they were gone.

Most likely not for another 10 years, if ever. Their patrons love surface parking.Louie wrote:But will they?GetUrban wrote:What's the joke? Anything that was originally worth saving is long gone. Re: Holland's Greenspace
Not a big deal to me. That building is not worth the parking that'll be built in its place, which is why this makes sense for them. I'm all for preserving our history when it makes sense, but when a building has gone into such disrepair that it's not able to fight demolition, then okay. I doubt it deteriorated much since 2012, so it would be interesting to pinpoint the transaction that started the decline of this building.

Omaha Performing Arts plans to raze former strip joint near Orpheum Theater
Christopher Burbach - World-Herald staff writer wrote:The Planning Department, which hasn’t found any historical significance to the building, supports the proposal generally. But it wants Omaha Performing Arts to gussy up the parking lot a little more than its original plan indicates, maybe by adding more landscaping, according to city documents. Removing the building will expose the likely unsightly east side of a parking garage that adjoins the Orpheum Tower apartments.

Omaha has such a thing about parking. I've been to so many cities where you don't get to park close to your destination. Street parking and having to walk a bit is not a crime. We've been to so many events in Downtown Detroit where we park on the street or in a parking garage and walk a few blocks to the venue. At night and during the day. Lived to tell. Never scared. Are the citizens of Omaha so obese that they are unable to walk? So frightened of whatever that they can't venture beyond the safe zone? Think about it. You park a couple of blocks away and while walking you see a business that offers food or beverage or items for sale that interest you so you stop in and spend some of your west Omaha money downtown. What a concept.
To pay over a million for 10 parking spaces is obscene.

Gotta find something to do with all that "non-profit" money.NovakOmaha wrote:Omaha has such a thing about parking. I've been to so many cities where you don't get to park close to your destination. I love this idea. This did be a condition to removing the building.GetUrban wrote:What's the joke? Anything that was originally worth saving is long gone. I agree. I think the powers at be who are obsessed with parking are not in touch with the mindset of those who enjoy being downtown.NovakOmaha wrote:Omaha has such a thing about parking. Internal demolition of 1512 Howard began in late June and workers started removing the top brick of the west wall on 7/24.
