New Gifford Park Elementary School

Post by frankt »

OPS has plans to build a $17 million elementary school in Gifford Park. The Gifford Park Neighborhood Association is pushing to have the new school built on property Creighton now owns.
We also met with Creighton University to discuss any possibilities of them offering to sell existing parking lot property near 32nd Street between Burt and Webster, or sell other Creighton-owned property that OPS could build a new school. These locations would be advantageous for building an “urban” designed school that would fit into our older neighborhood and address parking, traffic and safety concerns, as well as saving the current Yates building.

I think the top street is mismarked. It looks like it says Cuming, but should be Burt.

Apparently OPS is considering tearing down and rebuilding on the same site. Effort being organized to save the structure.

Beyond the historic structure there is also a worry about the community programs that will be displaced by the decision.

Good news! OPS got it's lot for the new school and likely Yates will remain.

On top of that, a parking area west of 30th Street that was to be part of the sale now is envisioned as the site of a new elementary school for the Gifford Park area. Creighton said Wednesday that it had accepted the Omaha Public Schools’ letter of intent to buy that property. Once negotiated, the agreement would be subject to approval by the OPS board.

Noticed this as well. Gifford Park is going to get such a shot in the arm, very excited.
