Kountze Commons (Former KETV)

A midtown Omaha church is launching a $5 million fundraising campaign aimed at a proposed project that includes constructing a free health clinic and commons area with space for a food pantry.

The project will help Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church better fulfill its mission, said pastor Jeffery Alvestad.
“Jesus talked a lot of feeding the poor and healing the sick,” he said.

Kountze’s first step will be tearing down KETV’s building, which is adjacent to the church. Alvestad said the 2,000-member church paid $2.2 million for the station property and the sale will close early next year. The church covered the purchase through its endowment fund, he said.

So? Does this mean that the big TV tower will be torn down?

Either it will stay, or it will be torn down and its ghost will hang over the whole place, as indicated in the rendering. They could keep it as a cell phone tower and earn extra money from it. A lot of churches hide cell phone towers in their steeples and get rent from it.

Any chance KETV will still use it transmitting to and from it from the new location?

Kountze Memorial Church to partner with Methodist on new clinic providing low-cost medical care

Looks like Kountze Memorial Church and Methodist are teaming up to redevelop the old KETV building.

That's a great use. They have a clinic in the church itself on certain days and they use doctors, nurses, residents and students from all the health systems in the city on a volunteer basis.

How old was that building?

It may look a little better when this is done but I hate to see another low density super block with surface parking.

Nice. That radar hasn't worked in years, correct? It was moved out to 72nd and Crown Point a while back?

Kountze Church in downtown Omaha wants to show off repaired windows

Image
These are not the typical windows you’d see in a house. The largest is 21 feet wide and 26 feet tall. The other is 19 feet wide and 18 feet tall. They are 140 years old and moved with the church when it relocated from 16th and Harney Streets in 1906.
I've always thought this church reminded me of the church in Home Alone:

Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church celebrates return of stained glass

If you stop by Koutnze Memorial Lutheran Church downtown, you will quickly notice something. Beyond friendly faces ready to share their faith, you'll see eye-catching stained glass that turns nearly every room into a work of art. “All of our windows in the facility tell a story," said Jim Smejkal, Superintendent for Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church. "We have 94 windows in the church itself and it's beautiful to be here on Sunday morning with the sun shining in.”
