WE have been talking about this in the Aksarben thread, but now it looks like Broadmoor is taking over here. I will have to move some of those tposts into this thread later on...

Ever since they started talking about apartments on this "South Aksarben" campus I have thought it was a waste of space. Maybe their thinking is different than mine, but being right next to the Arena this should be an entertainment district, not housing. Maybe Pauli's has influenced the Trustees on this decision, but this is another 'what could have been' area. (IMHO)
I was just wondering last night, if it would ever be feasible to replace the parking lots surrounding Baxter Arena to put in mixed use space with parking on the lower levels.

They developed most of the apartments in Aksarben, so I'm not too worried. Reading the specs in the article, in no way does this sound suburban.
But agreed with above, this should probably have retail space in it.

Just looking back on this project... This will be the west 3 acres of the project, the parking lot for Baxter, the east 5 acres that is now getting surcharge will be the 236 apartment unit...

This is for the arena? I thought it was that large of a parking complex for the apartments. That makes more sense then (though I still wish Baxter could have fronted Center).

Yes, this is the 3 acres of the non apartment site set aside for arena parking. Once they (OPPD?) are done with their project, Baxter will get the parking lot just to the south of this also, so the arena will be surrounded on all sides by parking....

Yeah, that's certainly not ideal. The Aksarben area is planned so well and it would have been cool if the arena could have tied into it too...maybe a little more park space could have been had. When you include the other side of the creek the mass parking really is obnoxious, but UNO has so many commuter students its necessary right now. The real long-term question is what comes first, the transit options or the density?
I think I posted this a while back, but I asked Jay Noddle if any of these surface parking spaces would be developed and he had a negative reaction to the question... I think he wants the area to be known for free parking before anything else...
I still thought they could have planned better for the dirt they used for the apt project. They were hauling dirt from the site south of Baxter Arena for months to a site further away, and then they had to bring all the dirt in for the apts. I realize they were two separate construction projects, but to me it seems like a little coordination could have saved tons in fuel costs and lots of time.

Looking at that address it looks like it is where "A Couple Things" place was at?
