Atlas Apartments 1609 Binney St

Postby U R my Helix » Sat Oct 17, 2015 10:52 pm

OK this is not the major development news everyone thrives on ... but this little 4 plex; The Atlas Apartments at 1609 Binney St. has received historical designation "local landmark status" as part of an attempt to save & restore it. The city will contribute funds to restore it and owners plan to apply for federal and state tax incentives to allow more work on the building. Built in 1890 it is
the first known work of architect Charles Rosenberry. Reportedly it is only one of two remaining 4 plexes of this design and was also the site of the TransMississippi and International Exposition.

Good to see effort to save a solid building like this. If this was in the area near MTC, this would have been rehabbed already.

$78,000 TIF request for a $1.4 million rehab to create 6 two bedroom units. Will be a Low Income Housing Tax Credit property meaning people will have to income qualify.

This is exciting. There are some amazing big old buildings on north 16th street that would make wonderful apartment buildings. Also you're really close to downtown. The last time I was in this neighborhood, the condemned buildings were being cleaned up, albeit very slowly. There are a lot of abandoned buildings on Google, so hopefully there's some more activity in this area of town. I'd love to see north 16th street become the next Leavenworth street.
