Aloft Hotel (63rd & Center)
Bucky last year bought the former A Couple Things and Ray Martin buildings with intentions of moving the gas station. He now is selling the site to a developer who is putting in a hotel. Haven't heard the brand.
Quite a bit of change over here with the apartments going up on the former trailer park site with a hotel.

Partial credit. There weren't exactly a lot of people living there when that got built. Real gentrification is when you see 100's of people kicked out so 10's of rich people can move in. A friend of mine from SF used to hate this as people like her family had lived in neighborhoods for years and put down roots, only to have some rich jerk buy the building, put up some hanging baskets and raise the rent. Can't really see that happening with AK Village.Omaha Cowboy wrote:Interesting info.. Speaking of gentrification success..

However the census track which includes Aksarben Village was one of the eligible Omaha census tracks designated for Gentrification since the year 2000..and was one of the 21.4% of eligible tracks that did experience gentrification since that time..
I'll go with it being a complete gentrification success.. Cup half full ...

Re: 63rd and Center
If we take the former Aksarben Racetrack area out of the gentrification boundaries and just look at the few acres that the trailer park took up, yes, then AksarbenRumormill's area would fit perfectly. Aksarben Place, the Broadmoor at Aksarben South and this rumored Hotel certainly have changed the social group here.AksarbenRumormill wrote:Quite a bit of change over here with the apartments going up on the former trailer park site with a hotel.
I have a fear though, that after Sam Amato's passing, that the property valuation of that corner will become too tempting to sell out, and Omaha will lose one of its true hidden dives that can never be replaced... Gentrification has a lot of losers...

Re: 63rd and Center
I know, from what I've heard and read, Sam's son and daughter plan to keep the restaurant going. But what you state is a legitimate concern.. Let's hope, moving forward, they can make it work and maintain the establishment. Amato's is one of those places I won't hit up but maybe a couple of times a year.. But every time I have, it's always been enjoyable..In the same area (63rd and Center) when Chu's Chinese restaurant closed, after the family decided to move out of the restaurant business, I think I actually cried. When I was a kid, Chu's was the first Chinese restaurant I ever ate in.. and I loved that place up until the time it closed (I think, if memory serves, it closed in 2004).. Another Omaha gem lost forever..except in memories...Coyote wrote:I have a fear though, that after Sam Amato's passing, that the property valuation of that corner will become too tempting to sell out, and Omaha will lose one of its true hidden dives that can never be replaced... I realize that my wife and I are probably the smallest minority group in Omaha, those who really detest Amato's, but we are not going to shed a tear when it closes. Our meals there have been just awful. I really don't get that place either. I went with my brother in law, sat right across the table from him and ordered the exact same food he did. He loved his and I could hardly choke it down. Odd.OmahaJaysCU wrote:Not to spoil the good vibes, but Amato's is listed for sale on loopnet...been active for a few weeks.

I have never had a bad meal there. Of course it may have something to do with having never eaten there.Greg S wrote:We've always had great meals at Amato's. Have only been for breakfast though.

Like I said, we are probably the smallest minority group in Omaha. We have gone with family and ordered precisely the same food and had gross food. We wrote that place off. Don't know why. Petrow's has gone down hill over the past 5 years, and we can tell why we don't like that place anymore. Amato's I just don't understand.Greg S wrote:We've always had great meals at Amato's. Amatos is an institution. It would be one of the saddest days of my life if it closed. I have over 40 years of eating some of the best meals of my life with family and friends there. I hope Sam's wife and family find a way to keep it open.

This will be a Marriott concept hotel, The Center Aloft. Five story, 110 rooms, conference and meeting spaces, 120 parking spaces. It will look similar to this:

I just wonder how all these hotels are going to survive. That will make 4 hotels within a couple of blocks from the center of AV.

I think they'll do well, because the university's convention space is there, as are BCBS, Pac Life, and HDR.

I'm sorry... What is this and where is this going in at??
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.
