I echo wags sentiments posted above.  Yay!  Woohoo!  Funny, from the parking lot of the former inPlay, I was able to watch the construction of tower one.  Now, from the same vantage point, the new stadium blocks the view.  How things have changed on that side of town.

I am so happy in this economic climate to see this building moving forward.  I can't wait until it starts to go vertical.

Second tower ready to rise on riverfront
Riverfront Place developer Ross Robb often hears a nervous reaction when he tells people that the project’s second condo tower is moving forward despite the recession.

Robb finds that reaction backward.

“We feel better than we did at the same stage of phase one,” he said.

When Riverfront Place holds its ceremonial groundbreaking for its second condo tower this morning, it will be a testament to the 15-story, $29.1 million project’s strength and the developers’ persistence in carrying out an ambitious development plan.

At a time when other developments can’t get funding, Riverfront Place has worked through its lender’s tougher oversight to obtain the loan it needs to carry out the project. Although the second tower has taken years to reach this point, developers say condo buyers are staying committed and continue to come on board.

“We always had a pretty understated confidence about ‘It was going to happen,’” said Robb, part of a team of out-of-town developers.

David Brown, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, said the Riverfront Place developers have overcome concerns about the local economy, the housing market and the lending climate to make their project happen.

Brown said the project is important for its effect on construction jobs and the statement it makes about consumer confidence.

“How many other places in the country are announcing a $30 million condo project today?” he asked. “There are so many reasons communities aren’t doing it.”

Robb said not every development can meet the standards necessary to pull off a project these days. The projects that will happen, he said, must have a great location and be well-capitalized.

“A-plus real estate is always A-plus real estate in good times and in bad times,” Robb said.

Riverfront Place has been in the works since 2003, when then-Mayor Mike Fahey chose the project and its urban neighborhood concept to redevelop six acres of city land fronting the Missouri River. The first tower, at 12 stories, opened in 2006.

I'm just glad the economic climate in Omaha in doing well enough and hope they will have more like this. I do wish one day Cummings to Abott-Eppley would be construction free though. It's only a dream.

This was shot the day before you posted that.  Looks like site prep for the tower crane.

you beat me to it!  it has red lights on the crane (not the traditional red, they're big and square) and looks cool at night.  With it in place you can kind of get a feel for how #2 will look behind the bridge.  I know people don't like the chains, but a Joe's Crabshack would be awesome at the bottom of it.

Those lights spell out the crane company.  I'm a bit slow on pics, but can post some from the top of Gallup next week.

Thanks for all the pics guys! I was excited when Streets said they would be using a tower crane this time around and I have to say it looks awesome.  Having the Ameritrade stadium cranes and Riverfront cranes operating at the same time to me kind of represents stability and economic growth for all those coming into the city from the airport, especially in these economic times.

I think most of the ballpark cranes are gone already.  Steel erection is just about complete.

I also believe the Boyd Jones crane was moved from the Airport Garage to Riverfront Place.  I seem to remember that sign up there.

The second floor of the parking garage is being poured, which is starting to enclose the first level.

Here's a picture I grabbed after a lot of the fog had cleared today.

so the have the garage done, and look like they are working on the first floor.  at what pace are they expecting to get it done?  1 floor a week?  1 floor in 2 weeks?  We're looking at 15-30 weeks, optimistically.

I wonder what the possibility would be of Riverfront Partners stepping in for Townsend at the UP property.  They have done such a remarkable job with Riverfront Place.
