Did any of you read this thread: Omaha Next: The Big O Wish List?
Scroll down to the post "Saddle Creek To Rival Times Square". Quite interesting what we could do with this area.

This is retarded. Why do you want to take people off of the street? It is a necessity in places like Minneapolis, but we don't have the climate to require this. If you take people off of the street, then it will not be visible to those traveling by that it is a vibrant place to be. If you don't see a lot of people or the destinations, what will make you want to go there?OmahaNext wrote:The exciting part is that the new development lifts the crowds of people up off the street into new skywalks. Parallel to the street and along the fronts of all the new buildings, these skywalks are essentially elevated sidewalks, but by separating the pedestrian from the automobile, an entirely new city environment is created.
BTW, I know I am an a$$.
DesMoins does it?This is retarded. Why do you want to take people off of the street?

They have started the demolition of the old houses and apartments between 40th and 42nd streets for the new CHS Building at UNMC. Here is the internet page with the details of the new building, the video clip at the bottom is pretty good. With this new building and the new Durham Research Center UNMC is reshaping mid-town Omaha. I can also say there is going to be more to come.

thanks for sharing. Geez, I can barely wait to see this start going up. Omaha rocks... again!
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

This project has been in the works for several years - I think i started a thread a year ago about it. Drawings have been in the Wittson Hall entrance for some time. Originally they planned to close off 42nd street and make it a pedestrian walk like Creighton did with California. Here is a schematic:

UNMC Plans New Research Tower
KETV wrote:The University of Nebraska Medical Center wants to build a new research facility on its campus. The 10-story building would be built next to the existing Durham Research Center. It will contain 98 state-of-the-art labs, along with office space. Medical center administrators will ask for approval from the Board of Regents on Friday. It is hoped the building will be completed by winter of 2008.

UNMC land deal, street construction approved
Omaha World Herald wrote:The University of Nebraska Medical Center will pay $2.2 million for one square block of land adjacent to its midtown Omaha campus...
Regents also gave UNMC approval to spend $2.2 million to change 42nd Street between Leavenworth and Dodge Streets from four lanes to three lanes, hoping to reduce the flow of traffic passing through campus...
UNMC also received permission Friday to begin construction this summer of a $74 million research tower near the Durham Research Center.

Regents approve construction of second research tower
UNMC.edu wrote:UNMC likely will break ground late this summer or early this fall on a second 10-level research tower.
On Friday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously approved construction of the facility, which is presently being called the Research Center of Excellence II.
The 252,179 gross square feet building will be nearly identical to the Durham Research Center, which opened in 2003. As with the Durham Research Center, funding for the $74 million second research tower will come primarily from private fundraising efforts. Completion of the second tower is expected by winter of 2008.
Research activities within the second research tower will be multidisciplinary, grouped around UNMC priority areas, including cancer, biosecurity, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, developmental biology, genetics and molecular genetics, neurobiology, and organ transplantation biology.
