Updates over the last 15 months included renovation of 50,000 square feet and the addition of a separate, 30,000-square-foot power plant to house massive, 2.5-megawatt generators. And there are plans in coming years to renovate the remaining 30,000 square feet of data center space, Moreano said. He declined to disclose the cost of the renovation, which was privately funded by the Scott Foundation.
Among those impressed by the Scott Data Center's nearly-completed facilities were a trio of specialists from the Uptime Institute, a third-party data center certification firm that recently spent four days testing and analyzing the facilities before giving the Scott center a Tier Three rating.

The achievement makes the Scott Data Center one of only 14 Tier Three data centers in the United States, the only one in Nebraska or Iowa, and one of the top multitenant facilities in the nation, said Julian Kudritzki, vice president of the Uptime Institute, which certifies data centers around the world.

Omaha institute faces scrutiny after merger proposal
KEVIN ABOUREZK / Lincoln Journal Star wrote:It's an idea that has spurred heavy discussion among university and business leaders in Omaha and Lincoln. It's an idea put forth after UNL leaders early last fall proposed merging two UNL departments, one of which is based at the Peter Kiewit Institute at UNO.

John Smith, an Omaha businessman who serves on the industry advisory board for the Department of Computer and Electronics Engineering, said he would like to see NU create an engineering college at UNO. He said Omaha is the only city among the top 50 metro areas that doesn't have its own engineering college.

I did not know Grads at PKI received diplomas from UNL.

Yeah it's a pretty big joke on UNO.  Omaha and UNO would benefit from a local program.  I am sure UNL will do anything it can to keep a hold of it's power and pull though.

Omaha World Herald
When the University of Nebraska Board of Regents hears an update on plans for the Peter Kiewit Institute on Friday, it will also hear a last-minute plea from faculty. The complaints will not come from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where a plan to fold the computer and electronics engineering department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha into the Lincoln campus's electrical engineering program has been well-received. But at UNO, faculty representatives have passed resolutions opposing the plan and asking for their own engineering college. They view the merger as a dismantling of UNO and a threat to its unity, according to Harrison Means, an associate professor of teacher education and member of the faculty senate. “UNO is a vibrant, effective educational entity, and we believe the regents should protect it, not promote or authorize predation,” Means said.
Regents are meeting today for an update on the proposal - Maybe they will take into consideration the concerns of the UNO faculty, but I'm not hopeful.

While it's far-fetched, I've always thought a re-organization/re-naming of the state university system is needed, to focus and emphasize the strengths of each campus.

UNL --> University of Nebraska, flagship and primary research campus.
UNO --> U of Omaha, metropolitan university, focus on practical business applications, public affairs.
UNK --> Nebraska State, small, liberal arts/teachers college
UNMC --> Maybe folded into UNL ... one of the primary functions at UNMC is research, and this way the total research dollars wouldn't be divided between campuses.

I know it's unlikely to happen, but this would give each campus an identity other than being a feeder to UNL.

Why does it always seem that Lincoln is always trying to undo Omaha?
When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you're doing his will.
