The lights do look nice. Lets hope they keep the lights working or it soon will look like |expletive|. It does make you wonder though, when colleges are having such a hard time with their budgets, why they waste their money adding pretty lights to a parking structure. On top of that, there's the cost involved in maintaining the lights.

Hopefully the LED lights won't need much maintenance, but it does stand to question why they would dress up a parking garage.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s biomechanics program has become a powerhouse, and it will be rewarded with a lot more space.

The NU Board of Regents on Friday approved a plan to build a large addition to the three-level Biomechanics Research Building, which was erected four years ago.

The regents expect construction on the addition to start in April and to be completed in September 2019, more than doubling the size of the existing building. The $11.6 million addition is to be privately funded.

From a NextDoor string: "UNO is planning on taking out another huge parking lot and a set of dorms within the next couple of years. That will seriously affect parking in all surrounding areas (neighborhoods & parks). The goal of the school is "20 by 2020". So that's 20,000 students by 2020. And the new academic building that will be build between DSH and the TLC Alum Center will be where it's located." Is this true?

The location for the building doesn't match anything I've seen in UNO's 2014 Master Plan, nor anything I've heard from my connections at the university. Last I knew, Allwine Hall was due to be torn down next and replaced with a modern dorm building, following the completion of the Performing Arts building expansion. Given all of the significant changes to Scott Campus development that weren't on the 2014 plan, I suppose I wouldn't be surprised if UNO revised their plans for North Campus.

I don't know if this is good news, but NARI is putting $150k into their Scott Tech location.

Impressive partnership with the Department of Defense for the university.

https://www.unomaha.edu/college-of-info ... ership.php
The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) today announced a partnership with the United States Department of Defense to help streamline the process, and increase the accuracy of, identifying the skeletal remains of fallen soldiers.

The partnership brings together faculty from UNO’s College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T) and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). A formal agreement to launch the project was finalized with a visit by the new director of the DPAA, Kelly McKeague, to Offutt Air Force Base to meet IS&T officials including IS&T Dean Hesham Ali, Ph.D., and Sachin Pawaskar, Ph.D., a senior research technology fellow at IS&T, on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

“We’re incredibly honored to be working with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and to help bring closure to the families of the fallen soldiers,” Ali said. “We are able to develop solutions based on advanced bioinformatics algorithms, which will augment DPAA’s established process of identifying skeletal remains. It is our hope that this work will represent a new and innovative tool in forensic anthropology and help the broader scientific community with potential use in similar cases on a global scale.”

The University of Nebraska at Omaha says its College of Business Administration is such a booming enterprise that Mammel Hall needs a $17 million expansion.

UNO will ask the NU Board of Regents on Wednesday in Kearney for approval of its Mammel Hall expansion plans. The meeting starts at 9:45 a.m. at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Nebraskan Student Union, 1013 W. 27th St.

Business evidently is a hot program in the NU system. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln last year opened the $84 million College of Business building, called Howard L. Hawks Hall. The facility was privately funded. The Mammel Hall addition also would be paid for with private money.
The addition would provide space for more classrooms, faculty offices, research labs, study space and a 180-person multipurpose room.

The expansion would add 43,700 gross square feet to the 123,000-square-foot facility. The addition would jut north of Mammel Hall.

Just stumbled on this Feb-2018 Capital Plan for the UN campuses: https://nebraska.edu/docs/facilities/20 ... alPlan.pdf

Of note, they mention an addition to PKI, further development to the West Center campus, renovations to the Scott Campus, CPACS building, and the Durham Science Center.

If approved, the bulk of the $23.4 million will be directed to the Durham Science Center at UNO. The building, on UNO’s north campus, hasn’t seen considerable improvements since it was erected in 1985, said Brooke Hay, director of capital construction for the NU system.

Randall Adkins, associate dean of arts and sciences, said chemistry, physics, math, geography and geology programs are in the Durham Science Center. The center is near the northwest edge of the north campus.

Regents material indicates construction would cost $14.4 million and consulting fees, planning and equipment would cost $5.6 million. The project would be paid for with donors’ money.

Adkins said the project would upgrade mechanical, electrical, plumbing and ventilation systems. It also would improve the building’s student areas such as common spaces, study rooms, student research areas and places where students would collaborate on assignments.

The design of the project would be done next year, construction would start in 2020 and it would be completed in August 2022.

University of Nebraska at Omaha biomechanics boss Nick Stergiou returned to campus after commencement ceremonies this month and watched the three-story addition to his Biomechanics Research Building taking shape.

Stergiou took smartphone pictures of the construction from his car at an intersection between Elmwood Park and UNO.

From virtually no biomechanics program 20 years ago to a booming enterprise that will occupy two buildings as of next fall, Stergiou and his staff have carried biomechanics beyond any expectations. The department and its facilities stand at the intersection of ambition and financial backing. The biomechanics program wouldn’t have flourished without both.

“There’s no place in the world like their biomechanics facility,” Randolph Nudo, a professor of rehabilitation medicine at the KU Medical Center in Kansas, said of the UNO complex. The collection of scientists, students and biomechanics work areas and research space make it unique, he said.

Another solid addition to the UNO campus. With the Chancellor heading both UNMC and UNO, these type of medical related fields should continue to get a boost from the University.

The UNO Dome has collapsed. The Indoor Dome is located on UNO’s Center Street Campus and serves as a recreation center.

“It collapsed sometime last night,” UNO said in a statement to the Gateway. “The good news is that it was not open at the time. Facilities will be looking into options for repair (if possible) on Monday. At this time we don’t know the cause of the collapse.”

    From the article:
That’s the case of Marlin Briscoe’s statue, which has been moved from Baxter Arena to the UNO campus, just outside of Caniglia Field.

UNO officials moved it there recently, in an opening by a main sidewalk used by UNO students and beneath the bevy of trees behind one of the end zones.

The corridors of Mammel Hall have inspired innovation since the building first opened. Students, faculty, staff, and community members alike rely on the building as a technologically advanced, sustainable facility, built to enable their success.

And now the UNO College of Business Administration (CBA) is making more room for its momentum. Mammel Hall is expanding to accommodate additional student and community projects and open up possibilities yet unconsidered.

In late 2020, a 44,000 square foot addition will be complete. The new wing adds six new classrooms, four seminar rooms, a newly designed and expanded Koraleski Commerce and Applied Behavioral Lab, and a 180-person general purpose room. It will also house the new School of Accounting. The addition utilizes geothermal heating and cooling as part of the college’s LEED-certified commitment to sustainability.

They're starting on that expansion sooner than I thought they would, but it's nice to see it happening. This makes me curious about a few more things happening in Scott Campus: when the PKI expansion starts, and the status of the two First Data buildings.

Joanne Li says serving as UNO chancellor would help her give back to the U.S.
    Kelsey Stewart
Joanne Li had to overcome several hurdles in the late 1980s to get from Hong Kong to the United States.

And after she arrived, she was able to complete her first semester of community college only because of a $600 gift from her best friend.

Li eventually landed scholarships that allowed her to make it through the university system.

Now she’s in the running to become the first woman of color to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Li, 56, was named Wednesday as UNO’s priority candidate for chancellor.
Based on her accomplishments and what was released about how UNMC and UNO might work together with the innovation center project at the steel castings plant, Dr. Li seems like the perfect fit. A couple things that stick out is her success setting up programs to encourage and grow entrepreneurship and her expertise in international business.

Here is UNO's release: Joanne Li Named Priority Candidate For UNO Chancellor; Would Be First Woman Of Color To Lead UNO

Here is Dr. Li's bio page from FIU: https://business.fiu.edu/faculty/expert ... ay&EMP=lij (includes a lot of information about her stint at Wright State in Dayton, Ohio)
