Growth like that is fantastic for the school and city. It really is too bad that UNO wont see new housing options till 2017 though. That kind of waiting list is only likely to grow and when the new units are opened they will barely meet the demand and there will be a waiting list again.

Love how this dorm fronts the street. Much better use of space and more "urban" of a design than the rest of the Scott buildings.

Totally. This is another great infill for the UNO/AV neighborhood.

Fencing going up around the hill. Probably start seeing dirt work this spring for the garage.

I was wondering when/if we would start seeing activity for the parking garage.

Originally they stated that the housing was going to be completed by August 2017 and the parking garage would be done before then. Maybe that can still happen if they build a pre-fab garage like the one Pacific Life did.

Just drove by the lot for the new parking garage. They already have taken a huge chunk out of the hill. Lots of grading work going on.

The new dorms haven't gone vertical yet, but dirt work is continuing. Looks like they might start going up within the next few weeks.

Yeah, Marty McFly was in it and he needed to get back to 1985.

Actually, the pics were taken with my crappy tablet camera.

I didn't think so. I thought this was the land where the Waitt Plaza building was supposed to go, but I didn't think they were starting construction yet.

UNO to acquire new building near Pacific Campus

Dear UNO Community,

We are excited to announce that our campus will soon have a new addition in the form of a building being acquired by the University of Nebraska Foundation, on our behalf, from First Data Corporation.

In an announcement made by First Data this morning, the Aksarben 2 (AK 2) building, located at 6902 Pine St., just west of the Peter Kiewit Institute and Mammel Hall, will be transferred to UNO from the University of Nebraska Foundation after a several-year transition period during which current First Data employees who work in the building will move their offices to other First Data sites in Omaha. A public announcement about the purchase will be made at 10 a.m.

The agreement, which was made possible thanks a private donation, is a great step forward for our university as we continue our metropolitan mission of improving the educational and economic opportunities of Omaha and of Nebraska.

This is not the first time UNO and First Data have worked together to advance the mission of UNO. In fact, the majority of UNO’s Pacific Campus, including the Peter Kiewit Institute, Mammel Hall and Scott housing, stands on land originally purchased by First Data from the Ak-sar-ben Trust in the mid 1990s that was then donated to UNO.

Once again, we are extremely excited for what the future holds for our campus and our students as a result of this agreement between First Data and the University of Nebraska Foundation. We will be sharing news about this great step forward for UNO as more details become available.

Sincerely,
John Christensen

Not many clues in the article, though it does sound like all the First Data employees have to move first and then the building may need to be reconfigured.

I am sure The Nebraska Foundation was given the right of first refusal, so probably had a big heads up on this building... They might have some bigger plans in the making that need time to work out for this property.

It was full the day it opened.

Really hope a good chunk of the parking is included in this deal.

Interesting to see what First Data does with their re-structuring too. The TIF on their buildings recently ended, they were paying about $600K a year on their property taxes for the whole campus, wouldn't be at all shocked if they are trying to lessen that on their books.

Promising not to do a 'Pelini,' Perlman reflects on athletics, academics, and signs off as UNL chancellor

http://www.omaha.com/news/education/pro ... b9f25.html

Harvey Perlman quoted from the Omaha-World Herald regarding UNL and UNO:
Kate Howard/Omaha-World Herald staff writer wrote:

He stressed the importance of UNL’s staying true to its mission as flagship campus, a description that has lost favor with university leaders as they stress cross-campus cooperation.
“Nebraska as a state cannot be competitive unless it has a strong, growing, cutting-edge comprehensive research university,” Perlman said. “That university is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.”
At the same time, Perlman said, work must continue to eliminate “unnecessary rivalries” between UNL and its sister campus, the University of Nebraska at Omaha — as well as between the cities themselves.

Eliminate unnecessary rivalries = UNO lies down and takes it?

Can't say I'm terribly sad to see Perlman go, and this statement only reinforces my beliefs.

I just talked with one of the track coaches at UNO. I didn't know they used Burke's facilities since they lost their outdoor location.

He said that the 300 m indoor palindrome was tied into the baseball and softball phase of the Chili Green development. Because of the success of Baxter he believes they may start during the 2017-2018 school year. It was slated to be done sometime before 2025.

He also said that they are trying to tie it into some sort of Sports Medicine program, possibly jointly with UNMC.

But with an indoor facility they could host all sorts of local Hugh School events.

I stated this a while back, although I cannot recall in what thread. Eventually UNO will also take the North Building as well.

That is correct. They are trying to cut costs.

RNcyanide: To answer your question, First Data owns the North and South buildings at 6902 Pine. Most if not all of the people in the South building will move into the North building, however, that has not been really thought out yet - as the North building is already full, plus parking will be on the breaking point (since many UNO students who don't pay to park like to park in the First Data parking lot).

First Data also owns the Data Center on the SW corner of 72nd and Pacific, the one with the gate around it, as well as a processing facility behind Northern Tool, HuHot, and Boot Barn - so in perspective they own 3 corners of 72nd and Pacific. They also own a processing facility by Ida Street and Sorensen Parkway - the one with a big hill around it with a concrete fence on top.
