Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
Just got an email announcing that The Limelight is having an open house this Friday, June 27, 4 - 6 PM. The email does ask for an RSVP, and the contact info is the same as listed on their website. Looks like the site has been updated with photos and floorplans since the last time I saw it.

Kyle and Rose Anderson are opening a restaurant in the retail space on the ground floor. Kyle was once the executive chef at V Mertz. They haves lived in Berkely California for the past several years but are returning to Omaha to open this new restaurant. It will be a locally sourced upscale restaurant with a full bar.
Yet to be named.
Also the apartments are already 50% leased!

This is a pretty huge deal! Feels like Omaha is done playing the we wish we were more like the big cities and as a community making it happen. Love the energy in the city lately.

Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
That could be huge for 16th Street.
Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
No doubt. Between this development and getting rid of the "dark alleyway of trees", I'm pretty optimistic about 16th street.iamjacobm wrote:That could be huge for 16th Street.

Disagree totally on the tree canopy. It is/was beautiful. It will take decades to replace.

Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
I agree, I thought the tree canopy looked great, especially for that block. I also liked the old decorative bus stops that were there as well. I think that both of those things gave the block some extra character. It didn't look like a generic block you would see elsewhere in the city. Just too bad so many people would hang out down there causing the area to not look as nice.nativeomahan wrote:Disagree totally on the tree canopy. It is/was beautiful. The tree canopy looked beautiful as seen in this pic Dicon took this spring:

It looked nice from above, yes. But at street level this was not the most inviting street.

Agreed, I will miss the trees, however, to grow the area and attract people, it was something that had to be done. A major factor was indeed the bums and unattractiveness of the area. we can all agree that it was not the ideal area to attract a business. With the changes made i feel that it will revitalize the area (however i would like to see some sort of green space, whether trees or bushes in planters)

Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
That's too bad. Hopefully something moves into that space. I walk by here all the time during the work week and if something decent would move in, it would probably do well with OPPD, First National, Woodmen, UP HQ's all so close by.ItsAllAboutMe wrote:Plans for the restaurant & donut shop have fallen through.
Depending on what it would be, it may even do well on the weeknights and weekends with the Orpheum only a block to the south.

Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
I saw a new post in this thread and before reading it I thought about the new restaurant here, Trento Magid was teasing the place a few months ago... Wasn't this bay more or less designed for a restaurant? It shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement... I hope.ItsAllAboutMe wrote:Plans for the restaurant & donut shop have fallen through.

I hope I'm wrong, my source is very reliable.
Re: The Limelight (16th and Harney)
I would say your source is accurate. I noticed this morning that all of the window advertising for the space on the first floor has been put back up.
Always a business-oriented city hungry for growth and focused on development with laser intensity, Omaha aimed high, reached for momentum and found critical mass.

I don't think that's possible with the residential units, it will be in the empty bay.daveoma wrote:Rooftop lounge would be awesome.Coyote wrote:New rumor: a high end Bar/Lounge is going to locate in the Limelight.

Mercury craft bar: a shot of vitality on 16th Street
Here is the vault that will become the wine cellar:Bartenders Clark Ross and Colin Breen, alumni of the Boiler Room Restaurant in the Old Market and Nite Owl in the Blackstone District, hope to open the new bar this winter. It will be called Mercury.
Mercury will fill about 2,300 square feet of commercial space on the ground level of the Limelight Urban Apartment Lofts at 16th and Harney Streets.
About 1,600 square feet of commercial space remains....
The bar will serve cocktails, wine and small plates of food on the ground level of the Limelight. Eventually, the owners plan for the bar to have an outdoor patio.
The owners plan to keep original elements of the space, including a tile floor from the 1940s and a vault used to hold diamonds in the spot’s former life as a Brodkey’s jewelry store. Ross said the vault eventually will become the wine cellar.
The owners also have plans to install a Clinebell ice machine that makes 300-pound blocks of ice; Ross said Mercury will be the first bar in Nebraska to have one.
When the bar opens, bartenders will shave different shapes of ice to order off the large block.

This Wicked Rabbit and Wilson & Washburn make a nice little collection of higher end bars around the Orpheum and Hotel Deco.

He said that Omaha’s Himalayan Java will be the first U.S. site in a chain launched in 1999 in Nepal.
Gurung, himself a native of Nepal, said he spent high school and college years in the Omaha area and chose to return to the city after living elsewhere in the U.S. Now 35 and working as an IT consultant, he hoped to open a business that meshed his love for his home country and coffee.
He said he persuaded the company founders, also his friends, to take a shot on Omaha. There are 17 stores in Nepal and four outside of the country, he said.
