Still, not even close to being a pervasive thing.

I will agree that Dodge st could use some major beautification, especially from 49th st to 480.

I was under the impression that they can't make Dodge street any wider because there are too many registered historic buildings too close to the street already.

This sort of impasse they are expecting to occur (because honestly, traffic on Dodge St isn't really that bad at all) is actually a good thing, in my book. It's usually things like this that lead to inception of adequate public transit.

Let's see a subway running below Dodge st. 8)

We can’t even get a train running above dodge (remember the proposal a long time ago) let alone one running underneath it.

Blah... widening Dodge? They should just convert the suicide lane into a shared streetcar-HOV/express lane from 69th Street to 31st Avenue. It could even be separated by a little median or something. After all the Omaha By Design stuff, and we're still talking about widening roads!

And, what's with wanting to convert streets downtown into two-way? Cuming and Burt are reasonable due to the dual university and arena traffic on occasions, but why waste the time and money converting Farnam and Harney?

Many streets downtown should, actually, be two-way. They're simply too wide and are empty most of the time.

Two-way traffic would also open up some great urban vistas, specifically St. Mary's heading east into downtown...beautiful!

But, it certainly makes more sense for streets like Harney and Farnam to be two-way in Midtown.

(hey Jake, let's try to cut out the generic news fluff and only post what's pertinent to Destination Midtown. :) )

World Herald story on the neighborhood gardens proposed for throughtout Midtown...

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=163 ... nd=8658759

Destination Midtown page: http://www.destinationmidtown.org/garde ... g-tour.asp
Ten circular flower gardens, each with a sign identifying it as “Destination Midtown,” symbolize the vibrancy and sense of unity among businesses and residents in the area.

The unique project was funded by a gift from the Peter Kiewit Foundation. The Foundation encouraged Destination Midtown to make a visible impact on the area while sharing the spirit of the organizations mission with the community at large. The gift also allowed Destination Midtown to seek further partnerships with area neighborhood associations, vendors, and the City of Omaha.

Get to know Destination Midtown by touring all ten gardens.

Making Up Midtown
Chamber of Commerce aims for area growth

WOWT wrote:The Chamber of Commerce wants to preserve the old and attract the new in midtown Omaha. While the area has seen remarkable growth in the last couple of years, the chamber says changes have just begun...

So where exactly is midtown? The chamber defines it as the area west of 24th Street, east of Saddle Creek, south of Cuming, and north of Center. Saturday, several area businesses threw a block party to celebrate the progress midtown has made in the last few years.

Plaza praised at dedication

If a redesigned intersection in midtown makes motorists slow down, Joslyn Castle residents hope a new plaza encourages them to stick around and enjoy the view.

The Joslyn Castle neighborhood Thursday unveiled a plaza at 40th and Davenport Streets and celebrated the redesigned intersection.

The plaza/intersection looks great.  I hope this sort of thing spreads throughout Midtown and the rest of the city.

Destination Midtown director resigns for a position at Cox

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... id=2370582
The executive director of Destination Midtown is stepping down from her post to take another job.

Tawanna Black, 30, will join Cox Communications as its diversity director on May 7.

Black began working for Destination Midtown in 2004 as the group's first executive director.

She has led efforts at Destination Midtown to revitalize the area from Interstate 480 west to Saddle Creek Road and Cuming Street south to Center Street.

Over the past three years, Black estimates the midtown area has seen more than $500 million in new development, including construction on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus and Midtown Crossing, a Mutual of Omaha project to build an entertainment, residential and shopping complex.

Black also worked to recruit local and national businesses to the midtown area. She said more than 20 new businesses have opened in the area since 2004.

She's done her thing, now it's time for someone new, hopefully someone with more urban development experience.

And, djc311, I'm sure you'll have NO TROUBLE at all contacting the DM people, or whoever the new director is.
