Sports Authority (old 72nd Street Circuit City)
Not sure what posessed them to build across the street from NFM in the first place... would have been better in CB, Bellevue, or west Maple in my opinion. I hate to see big name retailers like this leave Omaha, no matter now good or bad they are. While a tiny factor, it does go into the 'brain drain' equation. I'm concerned about the CompUSA store as well. BestBuy seems to be thriving.

I'm actually surprised W Maple doesn't have a category-killer electronics store yet.

If that was the case we would have about a dozen skyscrapers in downtown.Anonymous wrote:I have now also heard about the Circuit City site on 72nd. Two rumors makes if fact, right? :)

I thought there was some kind of rumor math, two rumors makes it real, kind of like two wrongs make a right, oh, wait, they don't make a right. Â But three lefts do make a right - what was I talking about?
Anyway, look for action on the CC location soon if Sports Authority is for real. Â They are supposed to be seeking building permits yet this fall...

Trenton Magid from Grow Omaha said that Sport Authority might be location in the old Circuit City on 72nd.

May be, but that was a rumor, this is someone going on the record saying it. Â But I copied your rumor in to this thread.

Sports Authority
Sports Authority is adding a new location in the old Circuit City building across from the Mart, at least according to the classy black spray paint that appeared this morning.
Ross's was more in front of Kohl's. Â There was a long older looking industrial /office. Â It was 2 stories and it ran east west with the short sides facing 72nd. Â That's about all I remember.
Last time I saw it, the Ross's sign was in Ames Iowa laying on its side by the Hickory Park Restaurant.

I have always wondered how that place stays open. Everytime I drive by there is no one there.

I think they are facing the same situation as Cabela's is right now and ConAgra did with activist investors.

I've always thought that the commercial development on the east side of 72nd street would be better served by mixed use. I think this is a highly desirable location because if its proximity to restaurants, UNO, and Aksarben.

Sounds like they are closing all their stores now: http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/20 ... nwide.html

I wonder what happens to the name of Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium (some of my friends in Denver still refer to it as Invesco Field). I guess that is the danger when teams and cities Qwest to sell naming rights for facilities.

I had already forgotten this was a Circuit City. Time flies!

...and then they were gone.

Breaking News: the owners of the former Sports Authority are putting $850K into renovating this building.
No word yet on what is going in here, but something is happening!
All I know so far is that it is the Jerry Banks Group, who is formerly connected with NewStreets.

The former owners of Sports Authority (Leonard Green & Partners)? Or do you mean the owners of the building on 72nd street?Coyote wrote:Breaking News: the owners of the former Sports Authority
New Street owns the Kohls building and some property on the other side of 72nd.

Any news yet on what is going in here? Drove by today and they are really working. Looks like it's being divided for more than one tenant. The whole front will be different.

I hope the grocery store succeeds. That should be a good neighborhood for a store focusing on organics.OmahaJaysCU wrote:Ross' Dress For Less and an organic grocery store I can't remember which one.

Plus it's pretty hard to top them. One thing that could help is an access road at Leavenworth.Louie wrote:Seems pretty close to Natural Grocers...nativeomahan wrote:I hope the grocery store succeeds. There used to be one. Unfortunately the neighborhood wanted it closed. I grew up in that area. It was a nice way to 72nd that the neighborhood used. Never understood why they wanted it closed, other than people in the hood, no one really used it much.
