They had a billboard with a drawing of the new layout and an announcement that construction will begin soon.

They've got an outside perimeter cordoned off and they are walling off parts of the interior. I wonder if people will eventually have to walk through a shipping container to get to the front door like with the 132nd and Dodge remodel?

It appears that the grocery store is being enlarged to the east.

I am assuming like 132nd, they will add a liquor store on the end.  Like I said, I bet they are almost identical remodels.  They were very similar stores.

They're expanding to the north and the east. Hy-Vee already has a separate liquor store on the other side of the health clinic.

If its like the one on Fort Street, they will close the other non attached liquor store and build a new one that is attached to the main store.

Really? I'll have to make sure I visit this when I get back. I still can't image what is happening here, yet.

I would have taken pictures, but it was dark when I visited. On the outside, there is basically a fence on the outer perimeter of the store and the parking lot is all jacked up with jersey barriers to direct traffic. I'm sure that they are going to start tearing down the outer facade and eventually begin the liquor store addition on the East side of the building.

Like Brad said, this is going to be very similar remodel to the 132 and Dodge location. Inside the store, the restaurant and bakery are going to be flipped to the other side from where they are currently at. At 132 and Dodge, the restaurant and bakery construction was the first thing they did inside, and that seems to be the case at this location as well.

Apparently half the store will be open in six months, and the rest in a year, at least that's what a manager there said to me.  Not a huge fan of the smell of the place when I go right now, it gets strong scents of seafood and cigarettes in certain parts of the store.

I talked with someone there yesterday, said it would take 13 months time. Full restaurant, Sushi, Chinese.
I did not recognize the place as was, even though I shopped there for 8 years.

The 60,000-square-foot supermarket is in the midst of an extensive remodel that will flip the store's layout, add a new 11,000-square-foot wing and introduce a full-service restaurant and bar with wait-staff, offering wine and beer by the glass or bottle.

It is the new concept for the company. Should be a part of most new builds/renos from here on out.

The article mentioned they would be adding skylights. I was just out at the new one on Pacific and the skylights and large windows really make a big difference inside.

I am the only one that finds the idea of going out to eat at a sit-down restaurant in a grocery store a little strange? I can't really get past the image of the old dining area that Wal-Mart used to have that sold popcorn and hot dogs, and was always packed with old-timers. I can still remember the pervasive popcorn smell from the one back where I grew up.

I worked at a Baker's that had a restaurant in it, I believe they all did at one time. It was always busy at breakfast and lunch. I am not sure what dinner would have been like if they had a bar and a waitstaff.

I'm still confused by the bar concept at Hyvee. A sterile grocery environment is the last place I would want to enjoy a beer at.

Yeah, I can't imagine a bunch of guys and girls leaving work at 5 o'clock saying "Hey, let's go grab a beer at the bar in Hyvee."

You are spot on. And yes, Baker's restaurants used to have restaurants, that were very popular at breakfast, less so at lunch and pretty much dead at dinner time. That was the 1980s and into the 1990s. They even used to allow smoking!

Times change. I will say that Whole Foods has a busy take out/deli business, and there are inside dining tables. But WF is much more upscale than Hy-Vee or Bakers.

I wonder if Applewood is going to update the facade of the shopping center after the HyVee overhaul is complete?

That HyVee is going to look really out of place compared to the everything connected to it.
