I believe the first thought was they were going to put it in a complex that would have been right next to the UNO arena.
Does UNO have a swim team? If so , where do they practice?
UNO has a womens swim team. They practice in the indoor 50 meter pool inside the HPER center, it is currently the only indoor 50 meter pool in the state of Nebraska.

Ha! For those less intelligent who can't deduce, that was a fat-finger of "tranquility".

Do you mean the not built sports complex or Tranquility itself?

The thread is Omaha Multisports but your post mentioned Tranquility, hence the confusion....

The planned location was Tranquility park.

Watch "10 Minutes with Mayor" on OWH, and you'll see why it's a good thing this did get built for a multitude of reasons...beyond just the $20 million in cash they wanted from the city.

I saw that, there was basically no way the city could have agreed to what the developer wanted. Basically as a cliff notes version, the developer wanted $20 million from the city, the land, wanted Omaha to pay for widening roads, and wanted Omaha to agree it wouldn't build any other swimming pools or tennis courts until 2031. Which is completely ridiculous and I understand why these terms couldn't be met.

Yep. Sometimes no is the right answer.

I think I posted it for another thread... I'll have to look for it...

{edit} looks like OWH only posted the segment on potholes...

So it's going to be outside the city limits, I'm hoping like heck it's very close and not Galway to Backwardsville.

Really hoping this lands at one of these locations. The metro area has really fallen behind on youth facilities. There is a lot money that is going elsewhere.

I like the La Vista location, but curious on your thoughts on Tranquility?

Southport would be great for those two big hotels.

That Southport location would be awesome, the hotels would get a major boost in business and would help spur other development.

If I read this right, the La Vista location would be "next to Southport" but not necessarily walking distance from the Southport Hotels. If it is the sod farm, we are talking either the one east of Pay Pal, or the one across the street from OTC, or hopefully the one down the hill from Cabela's...

Not quite. You could easily walk for a potato casserole if you catch my drift.

I love the drifting smell of casseroles! Especially next to former potato farm houses.

Well, it's not like many of them would be walking anyway.

I still fail to see how anyone can justify giving them as much money as they want. It would be a fine product and those locations are ok, but I don't see how it makes financial sense.

Yeah with the hotels there, Southport would be good. Would be good to for the area around Werner Park. Bringing in all those teams on the weekends, many would find their way to the Chasers during the season.

Now I could go with that suggestion much more than the Southport one. It would fit in to the Sports District 'site plan' as I remember one original concept. A Swim Park, Skating Park, Fishing and Boating Park... And, oh yeah, nice Baseball Park.

Here are the planned features:
Tennis center with 12 indoor and up to 24 outdoor courts
Soccer facility with 13 fields, field turf and lighting
Natatorium with five bodies of water: twin 50s, 2012 US Olympic Swim Trials warm-up pool, 54-meter-by-26-meter pool with 10 lanes, championship pool that meets the new 2016 Olympic competition standards.

It should work out well. If it hasn't happened yet, there will be another hotel that should be breaking ground any day now. It will be right next to this place and the parking lots will actually have a connection.

Well, they have a nice drawing and unless I need to reread the article they don't have the money to build it. Maybe they should name it Wallstreet Sports Complex. I hear it's going to have a 350 room Marriott, office buildings, retail & apartments....and wait for it.

Construction to begin in 60-90 days?

I think this will also aid in the development of the area. Maybe more restaurants, etc.

Good luck to them. Glad its not in Omaha after recognizing how much money they wanted us to cough up.

This and the Crossroads project have me wondering.

If developers want our money, then why not offer stock like an IPO in the project? If I can drop a sum into it and 10 years from now, that sum is 200% bigger, great. They have their money and I have a reward for being forward thinking and picking a winner.

Taking tax money for these sort of things is basically armed robbery using the government as your hired thugs. They have heavily armed police that will do bad things to you if you don't pay the sum, and 10 years from now, the developers have gotten rich and I will be about to be stuck up for a new venture.

I think this will be huge for them. We are way behind in this area. So many youth tournaments and youth facilities in other markets. This will really help the gas stations, retail, hotels and restaurants in that area.

That's the one I was referring to in my earlier post. We hare plans done and out the door a coupe weeks ago, I would assume they will start building any day.
