This would be a nice addition to Papillion.  The land has sat empty since, well, the last ice age.

Place? Just "Place"? Don't these idiots know that the words Towne, Pointe, Village or Centre are vital to a development's success?

Midlands Place (Papillion)

Papillion development to have feel of Rockbrook

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130418/M ... -rockbrook
Barbara Soderlin WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote: The developers of Midlands Place in Papillion say the project will be modeled after Omaha's Rockbrook Village and have a focus on independent merchants. They'll announce the first five tenants during a May 1 ceremonial event.

Construction is under way on the first two of six planned buildings, part of a total of 128,000 square feet planned to include retail space, offices, restaurants, medical offices and a hotel. A permit for a third building has been approved by the City of Papillion.

The $19 million project is at the southeast corner of Nebraska Highway 370 and 84th Street, next to Midlands Hospital and across the street from the Sarpy County Courthouse campus. The intersection is at the heart of the growing city, but development there was slow until a project was approved last year to widen and improve 84th Street south to Schram Road, Mayor David Black said.

Papillion breaks ground on $19M shopping development

Construction is underway for a multi-million dollar destination in Sarpy County.

Midlands Place in Papillion aims to be a unique hub for shopping and dining. Developer Russ Daub said the $19 million project south of Highway 370 and 84th Street will serve an unmet need in the metro.

The first building is already being constructed. Shops should open this fall, including Jimmy John’s, Egg and I and Beauty First.

“No large anchors, no big-box-type discount retailers,” Daub said.

"Focus on independent merchants"  First announced tenants are chains.  Suburban logic at it's finest.

I agree. I am expecting nothing from this. Just something to fill empty space.

Suburban logic? Pretty sure a developer is pulling the strings, and it's "money logic".

So how was the May 1 ceremonial event?  Was there a band?  Clowns?  Jugglers?  Elephants?  Who are the first five tenants?

Since it is the same developer ar Rockbrook I wonder if and of the locals from there will open another location at this new development?  Would not surprise me if that was some of what ended up there. Also would not surprise me that these announcements would be held untill closer to opening.

I am all for them making money.  Just don't push "local merchants" when Jimmy John's and Egg and I are your first announcements.

Nevermind, it's not local: Small Cakes Cupcakery
Jeff Martin founded the first Smallcakes in July 2009 in Overland Park, KS, offering 18 different made-from-scratch flavors daily as well as special-edition seasonal flavors. Smallcakes believes in its slogan of “Maybe a Cupcake Will Help?” and regularly rewards customers for their cupcake loyalty. Giving back to the community is a core value that is important to the Smallcakes brand. Smallcakes supports charitable partners and often proves fresh Smallcakes to events and causes.

Rumor has it a sushi joint is to open in one of the buildings in this complex.

Also, for all of the knock on this development in previous posts, it has actually turned out decently. Between Spin, Le Petit Paris, and Egg and I, and now this Sushi place, that's a significant amount of dining traffic in what was previously an under developed corner. Never mind the other retail in the complex. Plus, the buildings have a nice, modern design, and go well beyond the traditional strip mall feel...

I think this has turned out nice. And don't forget the largest hotel in Papillion is on the site. I wonder when the old Cubby's property across the street is going to be developed.

Yes, the sign at Wild Rice Sushi and Grill went up last week. The interior looked largely finished.
I love Spin, and it does a steady business. Wild Rice is located directly next door, to the west of Spin,

I had lunch yesterday at Wild a Rice. It has that clean, modern look that so many places are going for anymore, with the unfinished ceilings and whatnot. A small sushi bar, and a separate bar area. Probably seats about 50.
The food was good, but unremarkable in execution. However the place is new. Maybe it will improve once they get a few months under their belt. The menu is large, and is mostly Japanese, with some Chinese and Thai influences. Service was good.
