I thought that the medical area was limited to the side with the cancer center and the Walgreens, not to the north?cdub wrote:The apartments were only ever planned at the south edge if I recall correctly. This was always planned for health care.MadMartin8 wrote:Interesting. I thought the plan was to have that space be used as Apartments, and such? Guess that plan fell through.
Interesting! Either way, it's better than an open field and better than another Walmart.

Price tag jumps for new rehab hospital planned for west Omaha
Cody Winchester: World-Herald staff writer wrote:Earlier this year, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital of Lincoln announced that it would build a 120-bed, 200,000-square-foot rehabilitation hospital somewhere on the West Dodge corridor — a site since revealed to be a parcel at 175th Plaza and Burke Street.
The site is owned by a University of Nebraska Medical Center physicians' group. The hospital is on track to open by late 2015, spokeswoman Molly Nance said.

The land, purchased from the University of Nebraska Physicians Groups, is the first step in Madonna’s long-term project to build a 110-bed rehabilitation hospital campus in Omaha.
The planned $93 million, 250,000-square-foot hospital will offer a full continuum of inpatient rehabilitation care, as well as a pediatric rehabilitation unit, said Molly Nance, director of strategic planning and marketing at Madonna in Lincoln.
Construction will begin this spring and should be completed in late 2015.
...
Madonna officials say the construction will bring in $104 million and create 450 new jobs, 250 of them in construction.
Ultimately, the Omaha campus will employ 850 people with cumulative wages of $22 million, Nance said. The Omaha campus is expected to produce $45 million in annual revenue with an economic impact of $86 million and will be financed with tax-exempt revenue bonds, with 20 percent of the total cost coming from philanthropic support.

Fall 2016 Occupancy, from what I've been told. A bit of a shame that site issues have pushed this back a full year from their original estimates.Brad wrote:They are moving dirt today.

The thing looks more like a mall, than a medical facility.

Probably easier to rehab some people when they think they are at the mall...Stargazer wrote:The thing looks more like a mall, than a medical facility.

Too bad Omaha doesn't get a Madonna ProActive health and fitness center. The one in Lincoln is phenomenal. Maybe that's coming next?
Re: Madonna Rehabilitation Campus (Village Pointe West)
The vast majority of their patients are either hospital bed or wheelchair bound, with the remainder just learning to walk again. Much easier on patients/staff if the facility only has 1 level, to provide access to all. Not that elevators don't work, but they're seen as a bit of a boundary... Plus, patients move around to different therapy rooms/classes, as opposed to a traditional hospital where the patient is generally confined to 1 room for the majority of their stay.Stargazer wrote:The thing looks more like a mall, than a medical facility.
The campus in Lincoln is setup pretty much the same way. 250 or so beds, on only 2 floors.
Re: Madonna Rehabilitation Campus (Village Pointe West)
So how large of an area will this serve, will this new facility be large enough for Omaha, will people ever come in from other cities?

Re: Madonna Rehabilitation Campus (Village Pointe West)
Yes, they will get outsiders. Madonna has a very good name in the rehab world, specifically around Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I don't know about the split of what will go to Lincoln vs Omaha, but they're a regional draw, at the very least. I believe they've even gotten some national attention for some of the work they've done with injured vets and amputee rehab.MTO wrote:So how large of an area will this serve, will this new facility be large enough for Omaha, will people ever come in from other cities?
This will certainly be an economic impact to the local area, as the patients are often there for an extended period, so out of town family will frequent the hotels/restaurants in the area.

At Omaha's new Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital: a mock grocery store, an indoor SUV and three therapy gyms
The cost of construction is $70 million, plus $13 million in equipment and furniture and $10 million more in architectural fees and land acquisition.
Among the special features:
» A sport utility vehicle inside the hospital so patients can practice entering and exiting a vehicle.
» A mock grocery store where patients can practice shopping.
» A workbench where patients can practice dexterity.
» Walking paths and walking bridges so patients can work on coordination and balance.
» a warm-water swimming pool for water therapy
» Three therapy gyms with equipment and devices for coordination, strength, conditioning and to help patients regain physical skills. One of the gyms will be for pediatric patients.
The red-brick Madonna hospital in Omaha will include 14 rooms for children and 96 for adults, including 48 on the lower level for patients who need considerable medical care, such as ventilation.
Patient rooms will be about 400 square feet each, much bigger than the typical room (234 square feet) in the Lincoln hospital. Patient rooms will feature 7-by-7-foot windows.
The hospital also will feature a chapel and a 1,250-gallon salt water fish tank. Madonna’s referral region includes seven states, but the hospital has served patients from 45 states and every county of Nebraska over the past five years.
