So.. if I'm correctly interpreting the 180-225 acre pool under normal conditions.. we're talking a lake that should be just a bit smaller than Zorinsky.

So probably a dumb question, but why no dams on the main branches of the Papio? All of them are on tributaries.

Now they really need to get 168th St north of Dodge fixed.
Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
I'm not an expert on the subject, but it would most likely take much larger reservoirs on the main Papio Branches to control flooding. The West Branches and Little Papio tie into the Big Papio within the Metro area, so it's too late to build reservoirs in areas already developed along the main Papio branches. It's' easier to catch the water in smaller reservoirs along the tributaries of the West Papio branches, Little Papio, and Big Papio and other northern tributaries. Plus It's easier to obtain 200-400 acre parcels of land too, and provides more more opportunities for recreation and development around multiple reservoirs.bigredmed wrote:So probably a dumb question, but why no dams on the main branches of the Papio? Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
Looks like construction on 15a will begin in a few weeks.
Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
Did they get everything OK with the land? I know they had the issue with the weird NRD Board Member trying to buy "surface" rights to the land. When I drove by recently they also still had for sale signs on the parcel at 168th and Fort.
Thanks,
Greg

The developer to its east said it was, so I guess he knows, their center point in his development will look across to the lake.Greg S wrote:Did they get everything OK with the land? Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
I'm not sure how close this is to starting. The big for sale sign is still up at 168th and Fort. I drove along 168th from Fort until Ida. There's a ton of corn growing, and the farmer's house show's no signs of anyone moving out.

Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
Much larger than Prairie Queen. I believe Prairie Queen's lake was just under 135 acres. We were told at a Home Owners meeting when this was announced (I live near 156th and Fort) that this lake would be about 225 acres, the total acres on site is 725. At the time they were comparing it to Standing Bear and saying it would be much larger than Standing Bear for frame of reference, since the two will be close to each other off of Fort St.

Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
Here is a good link to some of the potential dam sites. It is a little old but gives you a good idea of what is out there. http://dataomaha.com/media/metro-dams/
Prairie Queen is 135 acres of water and 335 acres of green space. Site 15A will be 225 acres of water.

I meant to post that they had closed off Ida at 168th back in early May. I had forgotten there was a dam/lark coming in.

If this dam project goes backwards it will be mad.
Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
There was supposed to be a Bucky's at 156th and Fort (even had a sign up). It never came to be. For this area, Kum and Go is not too far off at 168th north of Maple.

Yeah will be nice to have it go all the way around.
Still can't believe they have not done something about the one at Standing Bear on 144th. Somebody will be seriously hurt or worse there at some point I'm afraid.

Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
I run at all of the Lakes and trails in and around Omaha and I am upset about the 144th Street side of Standing Bear. I love the lake, but it's so dangerous. I am training for a half marathon and talked some friends into running there with me. They aren't familiar with the lakes and thought it was extremely dangerous. I don't think they'll want to go back there. I personally will. Mostly because I am used to it, but it's sad that they can't put a sidewalk up and some guard rails.

Re: Dam Site 15A (168th and Fort)
Wasn't Standing Bear one of the first Lakes in our system? I remember going there at least in the late 70's, when, there was nothing out there. At the time I am sure they never imagined Omaha developing around it, or the need to protect people from, traffic, of all things.I am outdoorsy wrote:I run at all of the Lakes and trails in and around Omaha and I am upset about the 144th Street side of Standing Bear. I think Standing Bear and Cunningham were early in the process. Anybody know which came first?

I've wished they would make a side walk and put a guard rail up forever though. Does anyone know how you would go about getting it done?

I'm afraid something tragic will happen before anything is done.

Thank you! I just emailed her. We will see what we can do. I love taking my kids out to the lakes. They ride bikes and I run. But I wouldn't ever take them on that side of Standing Bear!

Back to Damsite 15A. Here are a couple photos I shot on Tuesday. My company engineered a Sanitary Sewer that will run along the east side of the lake.
