The non-profit group Heritage Services plans a library project for the southwest corner of 72nd and Dodge Streets.
The group, led by some of Omaha’s biggest names in business and philanthropy, is expected to announce its plans Wednesday. It has scheduled a press conference at the former Border’s bookstore, 7201 Dodge St., to announce Heritage Services’ “newest Omaha project.”
This would be a great use of this building. It already brought bibliophiliacs to this spot, and the thought of some sort of library in the crossroads area was already in the plans... This deserves a thread of its own
I had heard about this project about a year ago, but a different nonprofit was attached to it. They wanted to do a "digital library" with a lot of good community stuff including computer classes. Interested to see if this group is working on a similar concept or going their own way.
EDIT: Ok I hadn't read the article. Same people different non-profit. They were really excited about this a while back, I think it is going to be really cool for the city.

That is a nice trailer! I remember a while back there was a job going on at Ak Village and the architect (Holland Basham, or was it DLR) even had a big trailer with their name/logo on it....like they would really need to store anything related to the project there on-site.
At least you know the project will get done quickly with that much visibility!

Holland Basham, the trailer is now advertising in AV across the street from BCBS.
In my opinion, the logo is a bit weak and undersized, but this is a great use for the space and a welcome addition to the intersection. And I like how nobody drove to the place, in the rendering.

Construction should be complete within weeks, said Sue Morris, president of Heritage Services, the nonprofit group behind the project. The grand opening of Do Space is planned for Nov. 7. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
The outside of the building already looks different from a bookstore — and soon it will look a lot different: The metal frame on its northeast corner will hold a digital sign that will change daily.
I like what they've done, appearance-wise. But if you look real close, especially when the sun grazes the facades, you see all of the imperfections. Bright white may not be the best choice. Plus, it seems like it's taking a long time to finish-up the exterior. Maybe this isn't the final finish on the white part.
But it definitely beats the vacant Borders sitting there unused.

I noticed that on Tuesday night as well. The accent lights were on the main white portion of the building on the north side. It looked like there was a row of lights on the top and bottom of the white panel. Almost made the building glow, similar to TDA's new HQs.

$200k in renovations. Doesn't that sound a little high?
Actually, $200k sounds really low. Assuming the building is about 25,000 sq.ft., that would be $8 per sq.ft. The work they've done on the outside alone would be much more than that. I would guess the project cost is more like $2,000,000 minimum, unless they are getting donations. Plus they are putting a giant video screen on the outside. Looks like the project value is listed as 1.7 mil for the permit.
I noticed today they have installed lines of some sort of clips on the exterior of the north-facing white exterior walls. They might be installing some type of panel system cladding over the white wall.

It looks like they are installing metal and translucent panels on the wall clips after all, as I mentioned earlier. That should give it a crisp clean, finished high-tech look it's been lacking so far. I'm wondering if the translucent panels will be back-lit.

Yes. It is all lit up at night. I just saw it on Monday.
