Papillion voters face decision: Is $45M community rec center worth half-cent boost in sales tax?
Hailey Konnath / World-Herald staff writer wrote:About 4 miles from the site of the proposed $125 million Nebraska Multisport Complex in La Vista, Papillion is planning its own $45 million community and recreation center.

But Papillion voters will decide whether to advance the project, which features an indoor pool, a lazy river, gymnasiums, outdoor fields, a youth center and a senior citizens center.

The May 10 ballot includes a proposal to raise the city’s sales tax to fund a bond measure to pay for the center. The City of Papillion wants to build at the Papillion Recreation Department’s current office at 1100 W. Lincoln St.
The 190,000-square-foot community center would include, among other features:
» An indoor pool and a lazy river
» Multiple gymnasiums
» An elevated walking track and an exercise facility
» Golf assessment
» Community meeting and banquet space
» Youth center
» Senior center
» Arts space
» Satellite library programming
» Space for a yet-to-be-determined community partnership
» Soccer and baseball/soccer fields
» Batting cages

I am not a resident but work in Papillion so I would be paying for this. I do not know why the city needs to spend $45 million on so many duplicate services that are already privately available. Seems like a case of "We can spend money we do not have, so lets build something"

Sounds like the residents voted in favor of increasing the sales tax by around 90 votes, with a few votes still to tally.

The facility is supposed to begin construction this summer and take approx 2 years.

Drove by the City Park yesterday and was amazed at how the project has progressed. The structure of the Field House is up and it looked like they were putting on the roof. Just looked at the City Construction Update webpage and the aerial picture really showed the footings of the south building starting.

Have seen from Creighton University Quidditch team that Papillion is actually hosting the 10-state 14-college regional finals this weekend. Drive by and the new outdoor field is now in use.

A sneak peek at Papillion Landing, the $51 million rec center that opens Monday
Monday marks the opening of Papillion Landing, the city’s new community recreation center. Take a stroll around the 120,000-square-foot facility, and it becomes clear: This isn’t your drab, musty recreation center of the past.

This looks like a great facility. According to the article, they are going to have 3 free days....not sure if that is just to tour the facility or to actually use the features. Jan. 24, Feb. 21 and March 13.
