Big Lots takes over Gordman's store

Post by Coyote »

New Omaha Big Lots will open this week

Big Lots, the nation's largest closeout retailer, will open a store Wednesday in the former Gordmans building at 132nd Street and West Center Road in the Orchard West Shopping Center.

At 30,400 square feet, the new store at 2502 S. 133rd Plaza is the largest Big Lots in the state and features a furniture section, said Pat Zeigler, a spokeswoman for the Columbus, Ohio-based chain.

"Our newer stores have wider aisles, making it easier to shop," Zeigler said Monday. Since the mid-1990s, the company has increased the size of its stores and added furniture.

The company's older stores range in size from 20,000 to 25,000 square feet.

This is the second Big Lots location in Omaha - the other is at 2678 N. 90th St. - and the fifth in Nebraska. There also are stores in La Vista, Fremont and Grand Island.

The company has more than 1,400 stores in 46 states.

Between 30 and 40 full- and part-time employees will work in the new store, which occupies only about a third of the 102,000- square-foot space. Gordmans closed in July 2003.

Founded in 1967, Big Lots stores carry brand-name housewares, home furnishings, stationery, school supplies and some foods.
It will be interesting to see the quality of furniture they will sell.
Big Lots is a poor man's Walmart. But finally something is in that building.
