The sad thing is, those who are of an age where they have expendable income really have no place to shop at the mall except the department stores. Most of the kids, that do still hang out at the mall on Saturday afternoons, don't have a lot of money. They get it from Mom or Dad who now frequent other places to spend their money like on line or outdoor centers ie Village Point or Shadow Lake. The mix of stores at Westroads seems to have gone from a great selection to all shoes and apparel. Seems the only non-clothing stores anymore is Sleep-Number, Spencers & 1200 Images Art Gallery

Actually, most of the kids I'm familiar with have part time jobs... and depending on their parents situation (I'm coming from the Millard area, they're all pretty affluent), they have virtually no monthly expenses, leaving most all of their earnings to go towards clothing, cosmetics, purses, etc. That seems to be consistent with which retailers seem to be doing the best as well.

As for 'destination shopping'... it's still alive and well where my wife is concerned. I regularly accompany her as she peruses the racks, looking for new things to wear.

Yeah there is a lot of disposable income in the teen market. Has been for quite some time. I worked retail in the 80's and they were a force then.

Have been watching the "progress" on Cast Iron Waffles, so far there has been none. They first announced open 8/15. Well that's tomorrow, ain't happening and now according to their website, now slated for 9/1. Don't think that's happening either.

Opening in Spring of 2015. I met someone that claims one of the present food court tenants makes the best burgers in town...

Sounds like there were over 500 people waiting in line for the opening of H&M yesterday. Outside of the main department stores, H&M is the second largest store in the mall (Forever 21 is the largest).

Were the same people all in line at the apple store this morning :;):

On a serious note, Westroads got a new sign out by Dodge Street.

I'm having a hard time getting a good read on it from my office, but it looks like there's a gigantic yellow Crane at the Westroads!

That crane is working on the roof of the new food court! Well, I should say what used to be the roof! Any idea if there's another restaurant going in by Granite City? Concrete is torn up, they were working on it yesterday, large enough to be a building. I don't think the paving was in bad shape out there, at least not bad enough to tear so much out

Westroads Mall showing off its latest face-lift
The work is the fifth major renovation in the mall’s 46-year history and the first in a decade. Nebraska’s biggest mall now has 170,000 square feet of new porcelain tile flooring, fresh paint, modern light fixtures with energy-saving LED bulbs, energy-efficient escalators and new, more comfortable seating areas throughout.

Shoppers also will notice new signs throughout the property, starting with the large outdoor pylon sign signaling the mall’s anchor stores and restaurants to drivers along West Dodge Road. For the first time, the sign has an LED screen that can be used to promote events and new stores.

Work continues this fall on a new food court, which will open next April or May, Sadler said. It’s on the upper level, west of the movie theater, and is a new prototype for mall owner General Growth Properties.

He said not all of the current restaurants will have space in the new food court, but there will be more eateries throughout the mall, including one at the bottom of each set of escalators.

One new vendor, he said, will be Cast Iron Waffles, opening in October near Younkers. It serves coffee and Belgian waffles with a choice of toppings.

When the new food court opens, the food court built in 1991 will be demolished, replaced by a new retail area with “more of an upscale merchandise mix” of three or four new merchants, Sadler said.
That area, between Younkers and Von Maur, faces the West Dodge Road entrances. Sadler said the real estate there is too valuable not to be used for retail, which is more of a draw for customers than food.
Those stores could open in early 2016.

I prefer the elevator to the one that was previously there as well. I don't necessarily like the new furniture, but overall everything looks like a much needed improvement. Glad to see they are reinvesting in the mall.

I agree, the renovation looks great! The elevator structure is the same, just with a some big touch-ups: new coat of paint, wood & marble panels instead of transparent glass & glass bricks, and no more neon.

Glad to see this thriving. I think it would be nice to see them build another parking deck and offer up more pad sites as well.

They've done a really nice job out there. The new interior and the pictures I've seen of the new food court have a Jordan Creek look.

I hate to keep sounding like the old man on this board, sitting on my rocker on the front porch of cyberspace, telling anyone who listens about the good ol' days of Omaha, but I remember when Westroads opened. It was amazing. A multiscreen theater (4 screens!), Gizmos with tons of pinball machines, and you could shop at 100 stores without going outside. Even a helicopter landing pad for reasons passing understanding. It was a huge deal at the time. The Wiebe company developed it and combined with Regency it really was a nationally recognized area. Regency set a high bar for planned unit developments and made headlines in national business press.

Ok, now for my afternoon nap....

Huge deal. I went with my grandparents & great aunts. It was a buffet & I could have whatever & however much I wanted. Average age if I remember was about 70.

That Buffet/Cafeteria style of restaurant was never really duplicated in Omaha, from what I can remember. We had a Picadilly in Louisiana I would go to all the time, primarily because I could get all the fried orca and roast beast I could eat, but another good buffet in Omaha?

Of course now there is Golden Corrall and Pizza Ranch for the big chains and Valentino's and many Chinese buffets, but they are not the same.

I was going to mention that (not having ever been to a Golden Corrall I really can't judge), but I don't think they are th same in terms of varieties of home cooked foods.

That place was also located at the mall in Lincoln. I still remember to this day how gross the food was, my grandparents loved it.
