Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
They are removing a lot of dirt. Do they have to do any environmental remediation? With as old as that site is, I wouldn't be too shocked if there was a high amount of lead in the soil or things like that.

Used to work there. Probably oil in the old rail bed as well as asphalt in the ground. Not a lot of chemical spills.RNcyanide wrote:They are removing a lot of dirt. I don't remember if we have mentioned this,
but the Lumberyard will be home to the new SW Precinct HQ:
After years in cramped southwest precinct, police near $8M HQ space in Millard

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
Sounds like a solid plan to give them more space.
Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
The article doesn't mention it, but when I was a kid, the SW Police Precinct was actually the Millard Fire-station. I can't remember exactly when the Fire Department moved out and it was converted to a police station.

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
All the trouble and crime we have down in the hood and its a solid idea to blow 8 million dollars out here in Millard? So the police can have a nice new safe address to work at? I think this is also the headquarters for the swat teams and drug and crime dog teams. Why put them out here when most of the trouble is east of 72nd? Shouldn't that money be spent down in the hood where they need it the most? Shouldn't that large police presence be down in the hood where they need it the most? Shouldn't a police officer who just got done carrying through a pregnancy be doing something else besides being down in the hood on foot chasing hardened criminals?skinzfan23 wrote:Sounds like a solid plan to give them more space.

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
I know this because I listened to the fire trucks pull out of that station 2 or 3 times a day for years. Then in the late 90s they moved to 143rd & Harrison where I still hear the fire trucks pulling out 2 or 3 times a day. One time back in the 90s when it was still on Millard Ave I looked out the window about midnight and saw my neighbor down the streets house was on fire. I ran down there and the dumb S.O.B.s were just standing around watching the fire. I asked if anyone had called the Fire department yet and they said no! I turned around and ran back to my house and called 911. I was standing on my deck talking to 911 and I heard the fire engine sirens going off less then 30 seconds later!
Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
Actually the current SW precinct is in that strip mall on 98th and M. The location on Millard Ave is used as an assembly point for I believe the traffic unit.

Because the crime is lower, the cops out in Millard should be forced to work in a dilapidated shitbox?GRANDPASMUCKER wrote:All the trouble and crime we have down in the hood and its a solid idea to blow 8 million dollars out here in Millard? Because my family had a friend that lived diagonal from it on Cottner Street, across from where the small engine shop was. We would ride our bikes around the block there. That was before Millard Lumber added on and the alley just south of Cottner went all the way through the whole block.MTO wrote:How do you know this?Brad wrote:The article doesn't mention it, but when I was a kid, the SW Police Precinct was actually the Millard Fire-station. Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard) In Progress
All the photos are great but once a project has actually started it would be nice if we could change the topic to say In Progress.
Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
I mean we don't do that with any other project..

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard) In Progress
I was rather hoping we could do it on a going forward. Just a thought that likely should have been posted to an admin topic.
Proposed,
In Progress,
Complete,
and DOA
If we applied these to construction topics it might be useful. To me anyhow, I don't know if others think the same.

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
It would work for projects that are not done in phases, the might get a little confusing, but other than it, I like it.

Also might be nice if we had the rendering of the project on the first post?Brad wrote:It would work for projects that are not done in phases, the might get a little confusing, but other than it, I like it.

I've always assumed they were to help with erosion.

Re: Lumberyard District (Downtown Millard)
There's going to be ground level retail. The brick will be refurbished and reused in the new street. And the hope would be that this would attract more development than former gas stations becoming used car lots. And it's sure a heck of a lot better than rotting structures, potholes, and chainlink/barbed wire fence.GRANDPASMUCKER wrote:This project is a real dud for me. There is concrete poured and pointy bits of rebar sticking out on the lot facing Millard Ave. Things are underway!
