In an attempt to reverse Fort Crook Road's decline, a local architecture and engineering firm has been selected to develop a master plan for the Bellevue corridor.
HDR Inc. should begin its work this fall and hopes to complete the plan in about nine months, said Michelle Pridell, Bellevue Chamber of Commerce community development coordinator.
Pridell said community leaders and the chamber worry that Fort Crook Road "could become worse."
Formerly the main north-south thoroughfare through Bellevue, the road has seen a decline in traffic counts since the Kennedy Freeway extension, which parallels it to the west, opened in 1994.
That has caused some businesses to falter, while businesses at the freeway's interchanges have boomed.
Most of the businesses on Fort Crook Road are between Chandler Road and Nebraska Highway 370, but the road also borders Offutt Air Force Base.
The study has been long planned. The Bellevue Future plan, a chamber-sponsored study of the city, identified the corridor as a problem in 2001.
Pridell said the chamber's economic and community development task forces decided that the Fort Crook corridor was the "most pressing" need.
The chamber organized a trip for merchants and city leaders to Coralville, Iowa, last spring to see a stretch of road that they believe is comparable to Fort Crook Road and that has been improved in recent years.
